How easy is it to avoid combat

How do folks. First post here. I mis spent many many months on Frontier Elite, and even occasionally still play it now via DOSBox. I am very much looking forward to ED, I haven't had the cash to become a beta backer in time so am looking forward to the 16th December release date.

One of my biggest worries with the always online, multiplayer is the risk of people just bezzing round capping everything they see, to the point it may ruin the game for me. Don't get me wrong I like combat, but in its place. Sometimes I want to just chill out and do some trade runs etc.

Also with so many people already getting on in the game, it will be a pretty big turn off for newcomers if they can't even get a decent ship because so many people are miles ahead, and just blow you to peices on site.

So how easy is it to avoid combat in the game, should you want to do so.

Thanks

Population density in Open play is only large enough for unwanted hostile contact with other CMDRs to be a real risk in a handful of areas (e.g. Sol).

I prefer to stick to Open as much as possible, but you can always play Solo until you feel confident enough in your abilities, and your ship, to escape or overcome hostile players.

that's the only way you will get away from PvP killing pirates..

Hardly.

So if I am in a PVE group other people can't hunt me down? Or is is something that other players are expected to honour?

They can, but the group owner will kick them out of the group, and people are generally only in such a group because they want to avoid unwanted PvP.

^This.

I played for days now, hauling stuff only a few jumps from my starting location. I met only one human player who minded his own business.
Don't worry. I think, you don't have to face those people unless you want to.

yes they can, but I image they would be booted as soon as it happens........ better reading the forums and asking around.

btw, I am not in this group so can't comment directly.

Maybe I misunderstand the entire game then. I though everyone was in 1 universe, If I join a group such as this, I will be playing in a different universe (It will look the same and have the same systems but will essentially be a different version of it)?

ED seems to be pretty unique in providing the tools that allow you to play the way you want to. Unless, of course, your idea of fun is to hunt baby seals just for the lulz. The game mechanics work against this sort of play as well as the victims being able to avoid it by positive action.

Hello Liam,

Personally I find it pretty easy at the moment. It does take some skill (therefore just a bit of practice) to avoid Interdictions, but the more I learn about it, the easier it gets. I've only been interdicted successfully once by a player pirate who nearly ripped me apart in my weak hauler in an attempt to get me to drop cargo, but once he scanned me and realised I was carrying fruit and veg, he let me go.

Lucky that time, so the only thing I suggest is, don't put all your eggs in once basket, which in this case means 2 things I guess:

If you're trading, don't use all your cash to buy stuff incase you lose that in 1 run.

If you're fighting, don't buy the most the most expensive gaer without leaving enough to cover your insurance costs should you accidentally slam your ship into a wall late on a Friday night after about 7 pints of lager. <--(Certainly don't do this twice.)

You can play in Solo, but I think if you're one of the many players that are joining on the 16th, I would stick with the Multiplayer aspect, because once you laern to quickly get away from stations and warp, you shouldn't have too many problems. Unless you have a bounty on your head or you're carrying gold ;-)

There are three modes, people in different modes (or different groups in the group mode) cannot directly interact with or even see each other, but their actions all influence the same universe, and modes can be switched at will.

Even in Open it's extremely easy to avoid combat. Especially from other human players as there are far less of them than NPCs.

TBH you are far more likely to get the unwanted attention of NPC pirates than any human players, so you will need to work on your evasion skills (i.e. evading interdiction in the first instance, and evading combat should you fail to evade interdiction) even in solo or private. I initially started in solo mode with the same concerns as you, but have been playing in open since the wipe.

No, the way it works is as following.

The universe is a living system on FD Central Server.

Solo = single player in that universe and you will see NO other player. ( PvE )
Group = group of friends that can only see each other in the universe. ( PvE and possibly PvP with group members )
Open = every player can be seen if they are online and in the same system as you. ( PvE, PvP )

The idea is that the universe grows around user/npc activity..

Nope you can join a group and play open play (with everyone)
join a group and play privately (just with that group and AI)
Solo (just you and AI)
Open Play (just you and everyone else and AI)

All of which link into the same universe but you wont see them if you're solo or Private group, but your actions (buying and selling) will change the universe.

It's also worth mentioning that you have a decent chance of escaping combat in Elite. There is no mechanic like tackling like in that other online space game, whose name shall not be mentioned.... I. E. No hyperspace disruption modules or webber that immobilizes you while 10 year veterans pound the sh*t out of you. With some skill you can get away, or even strike back. Even in a sidewinder.

Not only is it easy enough to avoid players in the same system, there's a lot more space in ED than in EvE. Depending on your line of work, you could go as long as days or weeks in Open mode without encountering another player
