How effectivs is Chaff?

I ask because I seem to get mixed results. I _think_ it has helped me against Cobras with gimballed multicannon in the past, but it definitely didn't help me much against a Deadly Eagle with a turreted Beam on its upper mount which was still able to smash my canopy.

Does anyone else use Chaff? And if so, do you find it works?
Cheers!

Chaff works against all but fixed mount weapons. But if you are moving fast remember you are leaving your chaff behind you.

Chaff stops gimballed weapons from locking onto you so is fairly effective. However the attacker can just deselect your ship which makes the gimballed weapons 'fixed' and still attack you. I do this when I'm up against an enemy that deploys chaff.

Nice have some rep, didnt realise that.

Hmm, so you need to hide in your chaff cloud? That makes sense. Now, how long does chaff persist? Can I spam clouds of it during a battle?
I'll have to do some testing.

The little things we never think about ... this is one of the most usefull tips i've read on these forums

I'll make sure to deselect my targets from now on - thanks alot and have some rep

Note that only humans can do that trick. NPCs get wrecked by chaff.

Someone was also claiming that chaff interrupts NPC scans. I'm not sure on the truth of that, but try it.
It definitely interrupts player scans. Was firing on an npc ship and scanning at the same time, it popped chaff and the scan started to fail even in range and within the crosshair.

The best pvP'ers are all using fixed weapons because
A. They ignore chaff
B. They do more damage
C. They require you to be able to aim.

I think the 'feature' where you can deselect your target to effectively turn your gimballed weapons into a fixed weapons just makes chaff totally useless. Gimballed weapons should not even activate unless you have a target selected.

You still have to aim them, and they're weaker than fixed. Also, you lose all subsystem targeting when you do. Also, for projectile weapons you don't get lead/trail indicators meaning they can only fire by estimate.

Take my Rep Sir!

You should set it to a keybind under controls instead of a firegroup. And it is preferable they use gimbal in fixed position than they use actual fixed weapons or gimbals when you aren't running chaff is why it is still worth it for PvP. You are at a good advantage with fixed weapons and chaff currently the majority of player fights, in my experience.

i have also found that Turrets are less(if at all) affected by chaff. while testing/playing around with different weapons, i had a beam turret installed plus gimballed weapons. the NPC fired off chaff and my gimballed weapons went haywired, but the beam laser turret never stopped or missed the target the entire encounter except when i pulled a hard maneuver, but it rapidly reaquired the target and helped melt it.

Sadly, you lose subtargetting, and you actually end up less accurate than fixed (fixed has a small motion to target), with a lower damage. You also lose information about the target ship's manouvres, and about how much you're wrecking them.

Ahh, now this tallies exactly with my experience. I only fly a sidewinder so my experience of turrets on NPCs has been mainly confined to Adders and an Eagle so far. (I've fought Anacondas at RES but not solo so it's hard to be sure about my results there). The Adders and Eagle with turrets didn't seem worried by chaff. The Adders were still pretty easy to kill because I could lurk behind their drives and stay out of their firing solution, but Eagles are just too manoeuvrable for me to avoid the turret. So far at least :)
