How exactly does defecting work?

I'm thinking of defecting from one power to another (I won't say who. :p) this would put me at rank 3 in the new power, down from 4 in the old power. What happens to my income for the previous week? Do I get 5m from my new power, old power, or not at all? Is Joe Power hunting me down so he can deliver my due payment? Will he hunt me all the way out at the core?

It will tell you how long you will be hunted for on the ratings screen I think. Normally you cant pledge to another for a minimum of 0.5 days. Not sure you would keep your rank, you might have to start at rank 1 again.

I have unpledged and have 5 days being hunted, which is amusing as I am 10,000Ly away.

I defected once and was hunted ruthlessly.
I think you can rest assured that your old faction will not be paying you anything.

They give up hunting after two days.

When you defect it lets you keep half your merits in the new faction, but the old faction hunts you for a specified number of days. The issue I have is your payment is always a week late because reasons. So you lose your payment if you defect? That's horse poop.

It's a salary, you get paid at the end of the week. If you start a week at rank 3 you'll get paid rank 3 wages at the end of it. Rank promotions/demotions happen at the end of the week after the salary is paid.

And of course you don't get paid if you defect - why would you ever think otherwise?

That is the price of defecting. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
There need to be consequences and this is one of them.
It would be very weird if they send you a check after you had defected.
People would complain about that because it would be very unrealistic.

I even think the consequences should be more serious.
I think that the faction should hunt you for much longer than a week.
A month at least.
If someone betrayed me I would not forget about it after a mere 7 days.
I would remember it forever. So a mere month is not too much.

But you're not getting paid for services rendered, that's a bag of whether you're getting paid or not. Payment should be immediate in this case.

Your points is cut in half when you defect, if you were Rank 4 and had 2500 points in your old power when you defect, you will be rank 3 in the new power since you now have 1250 ponts anf you need 1500 to have rank 4.

And the ships that hunt you are bad at interdicting, wasn´t much of a consern.

So I suppose it just treats you at rank 3 come payday and pays you for that, then adjusts your rank accordingly?

Yes but we're talking about defecting i think. Thus, you break a contract. Usually it should even add a juicy bounty on top of few weeks hunting. I like the idea that defecting is punished severely. You may disagree, of course.
You could also just unpledge, i think but you'll lose the merits.
It should be something done against the special weapon hoppers..... Let me rephrase that, it should be a hard decision to leave a power.
The immersion in this game is higher when people feel really dedicated to a cause, for me at least.
But don't get me wrong here, i criticise no one for doing it. Just think it shouldn't be an easy act, especially defecting.
Good luck with your new power

Actually, they're the ones breaking contract if anything. That's the whole problem with the week late payment thing.

Sorry, weird double post. I thought my first one had been deleted.
Damn mobile phone.

On the payment thing: usually you get payed after, at least in my country the salary you receive for april is deposited end of april.
Let's say you unpledge from a power, than you should be paid for the work you've done. I'm with you there. But defecting is an action which is against the law of the faction thus, every relationship or agreement from before is void then. You have that time that you can't pledge to a new faction after leaving the last one, that's the contract rule. By defecting you break the rules, therefore no payment seems appropriate.
But perhaps i'm even mistaken by how the game mechanics work. It's not my native language, i've a tad bit trouble expressing myself here...
