RCT 3 PC How far in the future was RCT3 built for?

I remember when RCT3 came out and peoples computers really struggled to get good framerate. The word was that the game was built with future tech in mind so that it would run really solid not only back then but in the future as well.

So here it is what... 6 years later? The game still hasn't caught up with the 'future' tech and runs slovenly. Sure put one ride on a map and you'll likely get 100fps, but build a decent sized park and you may only get 20fps.

Just how far in the future was RCT3 designed for?

There are a few options you can try to boost framerate if you're having problems:

1. Use the auto-detect to make sure the game matches the game graphics profile to your machines capabilities.

If that doesn't help then go into the graphics options and try the following:

2. Set shadows to static.

3. Turn off the blend option.

Dropping screen resolution and rendering quality should also improve framerate. Also ensure that you're not running any apps in the background and that you have the updates installed.

What are the updates for this game to make it better, because i have never update my game before and it works ok, but the framerate is slow on the game. :)

Have you changed the options I've listed in the reply you've quoted. Do you have the Wild expansion, if so you need to get the Wild update 3. You can find out more about updates in this thread: http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3

Michael

I have got Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 (Deluxe Edition), and i have never updated before, because a lot of people told me not too, but the game does work fine without the updates need for it, but it is slow sometimes but not all the time. :)

It is advised that you install the updates - I'm not sure why anyone would advise you otherwise. With the deluxe edition you just need the Wild updates (as long as you have the disk version), this will address the slow down occuring at night.

For other tips, read my previous posts. Turning off blend and setting shadows to static can have a significant improvement to performance.

How is it that a game that is over 6 years old still struggles to run on today's hardware? My laptop can play the likes of Battlefield 3, MW3 and Mirror's edge all on their highest graphics quality setting (that's just on the intel chip, not the nvidia that's in there too.) with little to no lag, yet when I load up RCT3 and start to build a medium sized park with a few rollercoasters and scenery the framrate drops from over 100 to round about 26?

This isn't a complaint, just a question about how game performance can be so poor. Frankly I am glad I have a laptop that can hit over 100fps on this game considering my last one sat at around 25fps on high performance, and on a medium park it dropped to 1fps.

On an unrelated note, can I post my tutorial on getting RCT3 to work under ubuntu over here? (the tutorial can be found HERE) It's still a work in progress as I have yet to get audio working but someone pointed out a possible solution to that.

The main difference between RCT3 and most games is the content in the game world. With most games this is finely balanced so any view does not tax the CPU or GPU too much. With RCT3 you are in control of what the game camera sees and you decide how much content is in the level, this makes it very difficult to balance. Newer games can also use modern DirextX and hardware more efficiently than a game that is ten years old :)

Which is why with the abandoned RCT moniker titles now a dead product line a new product line is needed, right David Braben ;) right! So glad he agrees. Oh David, are there any new Braben Shots "" of the new game you are making? My hardware needs it
