How far out do SSS pirates go?

I'm not a real explorer, I'm just taking a break from police harassment. No I'm not a pirate, I just wanted a permit for Jotun and that seemed to be enough for me to be stopped frequently. Anyway I'm now almost at Mintaka and no I've not made any first discoveries.

Occasionally I jump into a SSS in case there's a UA that is lost or something fun to find. I usually got medical transports of various sizes but last time it was Jim Perry and his bunch of less than merry men. So how far out from the bubble do these pirates go? Is there a safe distance or not?

before 1.4. you could find pirates around 1000 ly from sol (not above), in 1.4. farthest out have been 200 ly for me.

I was still coming across SSS around 1800ly into the abyss. I'm now around 8kly and I still find some random NPC Fer De Lance exploring every now and then!

I'll have about 10k systems worth of data to sell, so I think I'll pretty much be going from permit system to permit system.

Though I'll be picking up my battle Python first...

*grins* About a year. The stars of Orion were high on my list of places to visit and Mintaka was the very top.

I'm about 3 Kylies away from Sol at the moment and haven't seen any activity recently except for a couple of Salvageable Wrecks.

take a cobra, much safer. and afaik permits are capped at 25, so choose wisely.

I was just about to make a thread asking how far out they found NPC's, since I just saw Binky the Terrible 1474 LY from Sol (in Swoilz BG-G b58-7). It's the furthest I've seen one so far atleast.

And now another FDL came in 1630 LY out.

And at 1691 LY, attacked by a third FDL, managed to escape with 25% hull. Quite happy that I for the first time ever fitted shields on the ASP, even if it took a few seconds to power them. I'm starting to wonder if I've offended some NPC's or something. 1700 LY out it should be pretty lonely. Was planning on heading out, but with 25% hull it feels too risky.
