How fast is the FdL?

Hey guys, I'm really shaken (and a bit frustrated) after being killed in Lave. I teamed up with a random pirate who wasn't very good and got interdicted by an FdL bounty hunter. I jumped in to try to save him, he got away without a scratch and I got killed. Now my Cobra can boost up to 430 M/s and the FdL was going faster than me. Isn't the speed cap of the FdL 410 M/S with A thrusters and lightest weight?

Honestly on the inside I'm really because of two reasons unassociated with credits. One, I have to go reactivate all of my dormant bounties (wish that wasn't a thing), and that my wingmate couldnt escape a pretty easy interdiction.

How do I vent without spoiling these forums any further? I don't have a stress ball :p

EDIT: I turned on Metallica. Hope that helps.

Have some bubblewrap for stress relief...

Sorry to hear about your gallant efforts turned sacrifice.

I guess the lesson here is don't throw yourself in front of bullets for people and not expect to get shot. :)

Don't stress, it was a brave and noble gesture Commander.
I salute you.

I get about 405 ms-1 under boost. Ferdy shouldn't be able to catch a Cobra.
(Though it can boost and keep boosting for a long time, lots of power available.)

405 is the highest i've got my FDL, maybe with absolute minimum mass 410 is possible, if you got caught at 430 you weren't chain boosting or he killed you before you got out of range most likely.

I did have a B4 shield on, switched to A4 to take 6 tonnes off, hope it helps. I was chain boosting, and I had him targetted as he was behind me, he was inching ever closer.

Moments like this make me miss the endless FAoff drifting from Beta 1 :)

Hmm I know the cobra top-speed fluctuates quite widely compared to many ships but this sounds wrong to me, in future if they are gaining on you you should do the F-assist off, spin round boost otherway trick, pretty much impossible to deal with.

I tried that. Didn't work.

All ships hit their current speed caps when the total ship mass is half that of the thruster's optimal mass. The FDL maxes out at 406 m/s if it's 420 tons or less. You cannot go faster in an FDL, and stripping too much weight off below this point (much below 380 tons) will actually reduce average linear velocity as it will stay at max speed for less time and the retros will knock it back to cruise speeds faster.

A Cobra that can only boost to 430 m/s is not going to have much of a speed advantage over an FDL because the FDL is only going to fall down to about 385 m/s between boosts. Also, if you weren't moving directly away from the FDL, your relative speed will have been worse. Any evasive action, and any delay in boosting could easily have been enough for a well configured, competently piloted, FDL to have caught you.

Also, 430m/s boost is on the low side for a Cobra. You are either running the ship very heavy, or aren't using A thrusters. A heavy combat Cobra should be pushing 440m/s boost, and a light setup that still has a full weapons load should be doing more than 450.

This is much more effective on the Viper or Vulture (and does not require FA off, though it can help, especially if controls are less than ideal), but the Cobra is a heavy ship and doesn't really have better acceleration than the FDL.

It must've been that darn B shield. I took that off, otherwise I'm full A-classed.

450 on a light combat loadout? I'm doing the buckyball in a stripped cobra and i'm only just hitting 460

My fully stripped trade Cobra does 462, empty. My last combat Cobra could boost to 450+.

No armor, only one light SCB. D sensors and life support. If I'm doing conflict zones in one area, I'll drop the FSD to a 2D and save nine tons that way as well. No larger than a 4T fuel tank either.
