Ships How fast is your Ship? (while still being useful)

I've been running the Gauntlet at Wolf 406 and after continual interdictions built a special "running away" edition cobra.
I'm quite proud of its cowardly abilities.
It can hit 445 on boost with 44T of cargo so its still useful.(or an extra 16T with no shields but that just made me nervous)

Will the filthy pirates still catch me?
How fast can you go???

You get a rep from me for inventing a whole new class of ship..."running away edition" had me in stiches!

I had something similar (although I play in solo due to slow internet) and its great as nothing can catch you. Once I played a game of snake with three Anacondas chasing me and it gave me ample chance to get away since I had no shields, weapons or defences.

I am curious, how do you achieve this ? Have you an E:D Shipyard exemple ?

Basically if you don't need it ditch it- including a smaller Tank to keep the fuel load down. with no weapons power management is pretty simple so you can D class some things there- without a cargo it hit 481
any way this is it ..remember ed shipyard speeds don't change so you just have to try it out

And the power plant was 4D not A, sorry...

I am surprise because speed never change in ED Shipyard, what ever you could do with equipment. Are you sure weight has trully an effect on speed ? Maybe did you get such speed by diverting all power to engine ?

Ships gross weight definitely influences the top speed. ED shipyard only gives top speed at dry weight.

Even though I don't have a Cobra, I'm interested in seeing how fast one can get to. Supposedly a Viper is the fastest, so I'd like to see a comparison thread to see how fast a "he who fights..." Edition Viper would compare with this.

I wouldn't downgrade the Power Distributor on a running-away ship! You're vulnerable to being caught by a nominally slower ship (a Clipper, say) that can maintain boost for longer.

Cobras are faster than Vipers. Top speed with "A" thrusters and 4 pips in engines is 1.16 times the rated speed if the ship total mass is below half the thrusters' optimum mass. It's hard to get a Viper even to approach that point, so in practice although both have theoretically identical top speeds the Cobra is faster.

Ah, that's very useful to know, thanks! I've often heard it mentioned that the Cobra is quicker, but never heard an explanation of exactly why the Cobra's speed can be upgraded further than a Viper's. The Viper's nominal top speed is 1.14 times faster, so if the Cobra can be upgraded to 1.16 times faster than it's list speed, it'll just edge out in front.

Still curious though - what is the actual max (non boost, non FSD) speed of the Cobra?

Perhaps it's just that I've been fortunate to not have experienced this... but I'm wondering why the shield generator is below the larger cargo racks (it's that way by default, but with my OCD tendencies, I move it up). Is it to prevent your cargo from dropping out if it gets hacked, or something like that?

ummm? yeah thats it! you got it. I hate my cargo dropping out and I think it puts the shield generator closer to the actual shield which has to be better in terms of efficiency -right? OR maybe my OCD works opposite to yours.....
