I found this video kind of fascinating so I thought I'd share.
Elite is extremely unfriendly to newbies, we all know that, but I've never thought of it in a way that the games have their logic and "language" that can be kind of universal and developers have to rely on that fact because with tutorials you have two options - make them insufficient or make them overwhelming - so betting on some nebulous "common knowledge" of players seems to be the best approach but that turns out to be the least friendly way of presenting the game to people with not enough general experience.
Like I said. This video did make me look at how and why I play videogames from a completely different perspective.
(btw. the creator has followup parts to this video on his channel and they are equally interesting.)
My wife and I have played a few titles over the years..the first one she ever took an interest in was XvT on the old Microsoft gaming zone...where she didn't actually play but spent her time in the chat lobby talking to our friends.
We then both got into Tom Clancy with R6 Rogue spear where we were known as the married marines among our group of gamer friends. She was never particularly good at the mechanics of shooters but we all teamed up to protect her...as guys do when girlies are playing.
The next...and probably one of our favourites as a couple was Jumpgate...she spent her time flying a gigantic cargo tow and mining asteroids..whilst we guys went off and did the PvP thing exerting our testosterone levels...as we do.
RDR1 on the Xbox was perhaps her favourite of all time since all my friends back on Xbox used to play in a private server where she went around picking flowers and collecting pelts for the various achievement tasks...or commandeering me to go get a cart and drive her around while she did so. It was strangely fun never the less...she on the Xbox in the bedroom and me on the Xbox in the Mole cave. Her favourite moments were for me to act as bait..antagonising a bear or cougar then running away while she followed it and tried to stab it to death with a knife...I died a lot.
Skyrim...she did the girlie thing of picking up every single item that was pick-up-able...dragged her overloaded avatar back to her little house in Whiterun and filled every single chest, shelf and box with useless crap she had no idea what to do with.
She never showed any interest in Elite...or Star Citizen although she has accounts in both titles. It suprised me a bit considering her time in Jumpgate but she simply wasn't interested as both weren't 'social' enough for her. In Jumpgate...everyone knew who she was, knew who we were as a couple and would pass the time of day in the passing in game chat. I think the PvP centred nature of both Elite and Star Citizen where children threw abuse and toxic bahaviour around like a badge of honour just simply signed an end of an era for her...of back when folks on t'internet were respectful as gamers. I think we were more an oddity back then than today, communities were smaller and generally behaved like grown ups, even amongst the PvP crowd.
I have fond memories of Tribes 2 division one competitions on Barry's world servers whilst playing for the Div 1 clan champions, the HeadHunters...all meeting up on the BB boards before and after a match...or on ICQ in later years, both teams sharing friendly banter as we always did...different times.
Maybe just me getting old and missing the old days
