How good is the Cobra MK III

I recently got a Cobra MKIII and I was wondering, what is its full potential? My friend GSTWLKR said that a lot of people say that the Cobra is just about the only ship you'll ever need. I am currently looking to fit it to go exploring, I have a list of what I need but suggestions are nice, but I am thinking about getting two more Cobras. One for Bounty Hunting, and one for trading. Why buy two more you ask? Because I don't feel like spending money to buy parts when I can just get multiple of the same ship and have it like separate load outs. Edit: I know my signature says I have an Anaconda, but for the most part that is for role play purposes. I only have an Eagle and a Cobra MK III, but I will be getting an Anaconda when I have the money.

I wouldn't recommend it as a bounty hunter. For a similar price you can get the Diamondback Scout which is a far better fighter.

Anything else though, the Cobra is a great ship.

If you can afford it, however, the Asp Explorer is even better. But it is about 20 times the price.

Edit:

Cobra trader build: http://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk_iii/04A4A4A3D3A3D4C0s0s--0002030343012f01.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==
Cobra explorer build: http://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk_iii/04A4A4A3D3A3D4C----0202320n430d2f2i.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA== (if this is a bit pricey, swap out the A4 AFMU with a lower rated one)

Further edit:
Diamondback Scout fighter build: http://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback/24A4A4A2D3A2A4C27270p0p000404-4029292f.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==

With the Scout, you can swap out the shield boosters for a kill warrant scanner if you want to, which means you'll get more in bounties, but will be more vulnerable to attacks.

I actually had an ASP recently, and it isn't a good fighter, not for my style of fighting.

For fighting, no, but the Asp beats the cobra everywhere but in straight line speed. Hell personally I'd take it over a cobra for combat even, but I know how to make ships dance.

The Cobra is indeed a good ship, after 700 hours ingame im still flying it.

and in my experience, its a great fighter.. though, not perfect. you have dedicated fighters for that.

I've edited my post above with suggestions for builds for the various roles you want. Ultimately what to go for depends on how much money you have.

For example, the Scout build above is just under 9m, but for around 16m you can get a Vulture outfitted as a deadly killing machine, and I'd take the Vulture over the scout IF you can afford it. If not, the Scout is the best of the lower-end ships for combat in my opinion.

As multi role goes it is king, while the aspx can jump greater distances and Cary more the cobra once uprated can boost the fastest and can out run stuff when doing smuggling which is why many still use it for smuggling when they have gone on to other ships

there is nothing ingame you can't do in a cobra. all other ships are sidegrades. some can fight better, some can jump better, some can trade better.

if i'd force me to flying only one ship, I'd take a cobra MKIII (or python... hmhm). with more and more experience in the game, a cobra gets a beast. currently running a HRP cobra for CZ... amazing experience!

but why just flying one kind of ship?

i have always most of the time flown a fleet of specialized ships - currently running 2 cobras, 2 DBE, 1 courier, 1 python, 1 vulture, 1 DBS, 1 cutter and 1 anaconda on my main account, and 1 cobra, 2 couriers, 2 DBS, 1 FDL, 1 python, 1 dropship and 1 orca on my second account.

if i just fly around or run missions, i take a cobra. otherwise i will take a specialized ship.

though in 1.6 you might want to use the Python for this. Since, you want those extra module space for collector limpits and fuel limpets for those missions and loot you can pick up. :D

Use your boost and your Yaw to keep yourself edge-on to your enemies. Roll instead of bank. If you stay flat you're harder to hit than a Viper. The Cobra is maneuverable enough to out-dance most fighters other than the Eagle and Vulture. Anything else you can run from. Fully kitted it has power to spare and it's heat management is good enough for dual B2 Rails. It's only weakness is its huge top/bottom profile. Cargo space is great considering what it can do. Best ship in the game for the price by far.

actually, no. my experience from beta is: speed and manouverability is more crucial, shield strength isn't. i plan on a) taking a courier. great number of internals and can fit enhanced thrusters! b) if courier gets to small, take cobra. c) if cobra gets to small, take clipper.

So, clipper.. GOOD!

Thanks :D

Was looking for purpose to justify my purchase.. haha..

I loved my Cobra III, that thing was one badass little runner. I stripped it of it's weapons, built it for speed and used it for CG hauls. It out-ran everything that pulled me out of SC and I never once lost her shields. I wish I could get that speed in other ships with bigger cargo spaces, and with Engineers I'll eventually get that. But I still miss my little Cobra to this day despite having an Asp Explorer now.

yes! same here. after going from trading clipper to trading cutter, i had no use for it... but it is a great unmodded ship for 2.1.! also - nothing cruises that fast over planet surfaces ... best straight line speed ingame.

yeah ... i still love to use my cobra for blockade running. the only similar ship for that speed with more cargo is a clipper. or an orca.

It not much compared to some but I've got almost 150 hrs in my Cobra and, though I'll be getting an Asp X soon probably, I can't imagine ever leaving the Cobra behind. It's a great ship.

I could care less about it.

The ships that I like:

Corvette, Federal Assault Ship, Federal Gunship, and Cobra MkIV (notice the trend of big, bulky, and tanky with lots of firepower?) are all ones I would take ANY day of the week to the Cobra MkIV.

The only exceptions to those are the Imperial Eagle (Looks amazing and SOUNDS amazing) and the Keelback (But only, ONLY because of its unique thrusters that Fdev barely uses at all).

It will admit it's a good ship, especially for a starter player. But in the end I would never fly it willingly myself.

The Cobra Mk III is IMHO the best all-round small ship in the game. Other ships are better at specific things, but if yo want to do various things AND SURVIVE, the Cobra is hard to beat.
It's fast enough to run away from pretty much anything. Being small, it's hard to hit, and it's manoeuvrable as anything else in the game. Cargo space is limited, but it makes an excellent smuggler.
It's a very decent fighter too, if you outfit it properly. The main objection I keep reading about combat Cobras is the hardpoint placement: "They're too far apart! My lasers don't both hit the target!"
Well, duh. Put your lasers (1 Medium + 1 Small) on one side and your MC's (1 Medium + 1 Small) on the other side. Simples!
