How great would it be if ED became a never ending RTS...

... where you or a group, could start a planetary settlement, attract trade, build, collect resources needed to do so by using your ships, build defenses, .....

That would give this game purpose. Right now the player is too detached from the decisions and actions required because of them. Also detached from the other players impact on those decisions.

Sorry if if this has been discussed before.

The obvious answer is that Elite isn't an RTS. It's space-sim(ish) combat & trading game. And as yolomcbobbinz said this whole player owned base thing comes up and gets shot down all the time (in fact there's another thread at the moment)...

Personally I think it would be good if there was a way to become more invested in local factions, so although you wouldn't own a station or a base, you could profit directly from it's success (and equally suffer from its failure). Kind of powerplay but on a much smaller, but more relevant-feeling level. Direct ownership wouldn't really work in a multiplayer game like this. An offline mode though... ;)

It has been discussed before, but that's ok. Everything has been discussed before. We are doomed to repeat ourselves for ever and ever until we die.

I would love there to be something like that in the game.
I am not sure if it is doable in a huge online multiplayer universe like this.

If only this was an offline game. The sky would be the limit.
It would be no problem to implement stuff like this or give players personal space/planetary bases, etc. etc.

Ah yes I'd like to see this I can't get into power play too confusing, I pledge allegiance to a faction while I was docked in a hostile station and when I launched I was immediately destroyed by the station

A wonderful idea! :)

I hope to see such things.
And personal bases - on plants, in rings, and the like.

This is a game with endless possibilities. [yesnod]

I'll be happy if we can do more with factions.

Like
- targeted expansion and colonization
- improving stations to become bigger or different
- build new stations in existing systems
- affect stats like development level, security, population, wealth
(EDIT: all with assets owned by factions, not players or player groups)

As it is, ED can be played as a turn based strategy game through the Background Simulation ( BGS ), with factions as the players.
There are many people enjoying this and getting long term motivation from it.

Dont listen to the "yadayada space ship ... lone wolf .... EVE ... " naysayers.
It is your game, your trail to blaze and you can play the game whichever way makes the game enjoyable.

They *kind of* already tried to do this with PowerPlay, except you are helping some pre-existing 'factions' expand/defend. It's more indirect than what you are asking for, but it does still give players some kind of purpose & direction.

The problem with PowerPlay is that the core mechanic was way too repetitive & grindy to interest most people. If you could have done a variety of Missions to help your chosen 'faction' (power), then I think it might have interested a lot more people. Sadly FDev have ditched development of PP (throwing the baby out with the bath water).

I've often suggested that powerplay should be realtime rather than weekly cycle turnbased, and I'm also supportive of Players being able to start and nurture and proffit from the growth of minor Factions. I'd also like there to be a galaxy wide stock market, with shares in minor factions being traded. I'd expect their influence to reflect their price, so for example if they win a war their share price goes up, and conversely their defeated opponents share price will tumble.

TL;DR - make the current weekly strategy (turn based) strategic elements of the game realtime would be a good start such as powerplay and BGS. Then move on to adding a stock market, then (multi)player corporations and player owned bases/assets.

Key-riced.

Want to play an RTS? Buy an RTS.

RTS isn't a great word to use but there is a lot of potential in PowerPlay that could learn a thing or two from games like Stellaris without dumping the whole game on to ED. There is definitely room for PP to grow and if you don't like it then don't use it. Blanket "go play something else" responses cheapen the discussion frankly, even if I don't totally agree with a PP becoming a full RTS there's always room for discussion even if it's been had before, things change.

Hell, I didn't want a naff arcade shooter dumped onto ED either but we got Multicrew.

So you want dramatic changes to the nature of the game, and reserved for Open only?

Start writing your own game.

I'm not saying: play something else. I said: if you want to play an RTS, buy an RTS. Keep playing Elite if you fancy playing Elite. :)
To be fair there's only been about 2.5 made in the last decade.
There hasn't been a proper RTS since Dune 2 :p

No thanks. Sounds awful to be honest. But sure it can be added for those that want it, but not until after there are a load of other stuff implemented first.

Well im meaning RTS in the fact that you can build a base, engineer, defenses, ... attack another's base,... but if you want to go for a 1000 jump tour, knock yourself out.
