How green is your valley? Or: How I learned to stop wondering how Earth-like my favorite planet is!

I overestimated the popularity of my face.

Nah the exploration forum is slow but it does turn over

Love your little world, great find. Especially so close to home. You can actually take people there in under half an hour. Tear is a cool name.

By the way did you check out the Galactic Roof video of mine? The Deep Space Survey one. Also there's one of me doing the same but above the core. Episodes 3 and 5 have both.

You were the inspiration for both of those!

Apparently I am proof of the slowness of the exploration forums, hehe :) Sorry for the long delay in response!

Thanks for the props on my planet :) Its nearness to civilized space is definitely one of the reasons I love it. I may head back soon, in order to hopefully catch a different side of the planet than I did before, and search for more land. Speaking of, I (might) be first discoverer on another Earth-like world! In this case, I do use that term loosely, as the planet will likely need a little terraforming to be habitable, even moreso to be comfortable. I've uploaded some pics, for everyone's enjoyment :)

As you can see, it'd be a pretty nice place if it was substantially warmer, with a higher partial pressure of oxygen and more overall atmospheric pressure, in that order. Some more land would definitely be nice, but from what I've seen thus far, it seems to have more land than Tear, at least, with that reasonably-sized little archipelago I found. Also, notice that it's sun is over 2.5 TIMES the age of our own Sun! Given the possible diversity, and possibly even sentience, of the life that exists on the surface, terraforming might not be an option simply for moral reasons. Still, I count it as one heck of a lucky find! I can't wait to examine it more closely, some day ;)

Anyways, I did check out both of those videos. I watched the one where you flew above the core before we got acquainted, and I never realized I inspired that as well! Again, I am truly flattered to be your muse, friend :) I really never thought anybody would actually be inspired by my trip, which was by most measures pretty unremarkable. I really don't consider myself to be that great of an explorer - I haven't even visited Sagittarius A* yet! I must say, it's truly humbling (and gratifying!) to know that at least one person was inspired by my humble journey :) I can't tell you how happy it makes me, and you've inspired me in turn, friend!

Oh, and one last thing: Thanks for the kudos on the name :) Tear actually has multiple different meanings, which is why I chose it. Kalt is my working title for the other planet - Still not sure if I'm gonna stick with it, hehe ;)

I've found a few of these myself - they always make it into my video, especially if I was specifically looking for an ELW for a specific story-related reason only to find none. These at least provide a platform for the life required by my narrative.

And no problem. Yes, you were an inspiration. Add me in game: CMDR Dr. Kaii

It always surprises me that more people aren't into this kind of thing. As per usual, just in case, I think I'll bump again...

Im fascinated by it, but I get a bittersweet feeling when finding them, without being able to land and explore, it only feels like half a discovery. Im always excited to see one, and then half let-down when I fly away. Debating the math is fun and all, and looking at the planets conditions, but without being able to swim in alien sees and set foot on undiscovered ground, it falls flat.

This thread is dying for three reasons, nothing to do with how good or popular a concept it is:

1. we've pretty much covered everything so far. There are a few unanswered questions but they are for experts who so far haven't shown up
2. people aren't too much into the science of planetary statistics simply because the statistics in game are full of problems so a lot of people feel there's not much point delving too deep
3. due to the inability to save, bookmark, name or share finds in game, most people just find thinking about them too much off-putting. Especially because the only good thing about ELWs are their rarity and value. If there was something else significant to do with them, they'd generate a lot more interest. For example, if there were missions to find new homes for people/species, then people would care a lot more about the habitabilities etc.

Sorry man. When a) they give the stellar forge a big patch and/or b) planetary landings come out, this thread will take off full speed :)

All good points - Thanks for posting :) I must admit, most of my interest comes from how I use my imagination to think of all the possibilities. That there are errors, and that we can't land on these planets yet doesn't really disuade me - It just satiates my appetite more for what's waiting for us in the future!

I'll continue to bump it periodically, but I guess we'll have to wait for future expansions to really see this thread take off ;)

Would have posted sooner but I don't have reason to yet. I will not be compiling info about all earth-likes I've found until my current trip is complete. So once that happens, you may very well have a ton of info from me in this thread...

Oh boy! I can't wait :D

It's been a while, and I still find this kind of stuff fascinating, so I'm going to bump the thread again. Hopefully some new folks will find this stuff interesting :)

This is awesome stuff. I minored in Meteorology in college, so I parked my ship over a specific landmark and logged out for six hours. When I logged back in, I was ecstatic: Cloud formations are persistent!!! Yay! Then I spent four days logging in and out: Cloud formations are static!!! Boo!!! I had planned to study the meteorology of alien ELW in ED over the long term. Ahh well. I figure dynamic weather is a must have for season 3, so I'll wait.

I love trying to figure out what makes the planets tick. I love that the stellar forge doesn't just generate them using a weighted random generator: it simulates the whole system from planetesimal all the way up to the year 3300. I can't wait to get down there and take some rock samples!

When we get landing on planets with atmospheres then there's going to have to be some kind of climate/weather model added to generate the planet side stuff. Fingers crossed the textures from space get replaced with something that updates based on the planet side algorithm.

It would be awesome if you could spot a big storm system from orbit and then fly though the middle of it and there's not a seam where a sunny sky from orbit can be a hurricane when you fly down or vice-versa.

I think you could have that today. But any spot on the planet with a storm will always have a storm, since the weather systems never move relative to the surface.

At the minute a planet is a static object, I'm hoping with Horizons they will become more dynamic and when planetary landing is extended to bodies with an atmosphere that atmosphere will both be dynamic and be reflected in the view of the planet from space.

Most people don't stick around one planet space for that long - if planetary landings don't offer the opportunity for the rain to stop and the sun to come out then that will be a lot more noticeable to a lot more people.

All very good points, guys. Hopefully, they'll not only implement your ideas, but do so correctly (I'm looking at you, airless water worlds!)

Thanks for readin' :)

UPDATE! - I just wanted to add a short addendum to the thread, specifically my first post, as it's been quite a while since I updated it. Basically, I just wanted to point out that it's important to browse the ENTIRE thread, not just that initial post and the last page here, if you want to try to evaluate your ELW in full. I know, it's a pain in the you-know-what, but there are numerous conversations sprinkled throughout the thread that help shed light on even more complex variables, such as a planet's age, and how they effect a given planet's possible 'Earthiness'.

I briefly considered trying to condense all of that information into the already-insanely-long and complex wall post that started this beautiful trainwreck, but that would truly be a mind-numbingly long and arduous process to even BEGIN to undertake, so in the interests of preserving my precious sanity, time, and bodily fluids... Yeah, I'll pass, lol :p

However, I am absolutely still available for 'individual consultation', as I stated before, so please feel free to contact me with any questions or requests for analyses! This has honestly proven to be the easiest way to handle things anyways, so why mess with a good thing, right?

Anyways, yet again, I hope I've helped some folks with my crazy spiel - Take care, everyone, and thanks, as always, for lookin' :)
