How Humans could evolve to survive in Space

In the Night's Dawn Trillogy by Peter F. Hamilton, starship crews mostly had genetic modifications that stopped the effects of zero gravity and strengthened membranes to withstand high acceleration. The people who hadn't been genetically modified usually ended up having to replace various bits, gradually becoming cyborgs with very little left that was human.

The Seedling Stars by James Blish. A collection of short stories about genetically adapted humans... well, beings original from human stock, modified to colonise other planets rather than Terra-forming the planets so "normal" humans can live on them.

OP: Thanks for triggering these memories for me. I was in college (<mumble> decades ago) when I read this book.

It won't be an issue. Mankind will wipe itself out, long before it solves the problem of intergalactic space travel - i'm assuming there that they are solvable. We have weapons systems that can destroy our civilisation, but no practical way of getting out of our front door in galactic terms. You don't need to be hercule poirot to work out where our priorities as a species lie.

And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.

Yes, it's probably

Until we actually move off planet we wont evolve to allow for it. However Science may yet come up with ideas to help us cope in space.

This might be of interest since it's been stated in the ED lore that Elite pilots have had genetic modifications to be able to handle harsh conditions (ie high G turns and travel)
Interesting subject and man will never stop, with the 'improvements'. However: Genetics and nature, can kick back and you have to remember: Most of the bigger and stronger, primates; have become instinct. As a race, man is just lucky; to have women, looking after the fires.

The other issue with the things we create to farm, or tera-form, other planets. They will want their independence, their freedom; from us: Eventually.
