How in the worlds do I take screenshots

How do I take screenshots in the game? Im on PC but I cant get the game to take screenshots and see no options for it in the options menu. Do I need a third party program and if so which one is the best and easiest to use? I missed a great shot of my first Pulsar earlier today and Im kicking myself in the tail for not exiting out and asking but I was on a timed mission. Thanks for any and all advice guys. One thing about this community is that you guys have been great at helping me with my questions no matter how stupid they have been [big grin][cool]

F10 for a standard screenshot or alt-F10 for a very high resolution one. The latter only works if you're playing in solo or a private group.

Edit: Ninja'd by seconds :)

Edit2: Forgot to mention, the screenshots will appear in C:\Users\[USERNAME]\My Pictures\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\

And don't forget to take a look at the bottom of the options menu camera controls or something like that, can't remember it right now. There you can set the keys for free camera mode, etc. so you're able to take screenshots from outside your ship/srv... ;)

Not sure if you play through Steam, but their button (F12) should also work.
And then you can share to your steam profile right away.

Though for best quality, the games F10 button is the one I'd recommend

Correct me if I'm wrong but F10 will take a screenshot at the resolution of your display. Alt-F10 (in Solo and PG) will take a screenshot at a fixed, much higher resolution (but I'm not sure what that resolution is).

What I've personally done is use a programme called 'XPadder' to map the F10 key to my Xbox controller's right trigger. I use the Xbox controller for the camera suite and this makes taking pictures much more intuitive.

Alt F10 is 4 times your resolution! Use with care unless you have plenty of hard drive space!

Sorry for the necro, but I just found this thread and I have to ask about this. @Gunnet What do you mean the high-rez only works in solo? Will the game not allow me to take these in open, or is there an issue with resolution (or something else) when in open that mess with the screenshot?

The processing time for large screenshots causes lag & stutter in the instance, which can be disruptive to other players. You can use DSR to play the game at a higher resolution than your monitor would otherwise allow though if you want bigger pics in open.

So to be clear because it's not stated overtly in the above answer, no the game will simply not allow you to take a high res screenshot in open mode. It's not a matter of choice.

I stumbled upon this forum post when I was struggling to take screenshots in my game👍, and I am so grateful for the helpful responses from the community. The step-by-step instructions and recommended software were exactly what I needed to finally capture those beautiful moments in-game. The support and friendly atmosphere in this forum are truly appreciated.

I use F10 - because F12 is default HMD reset. Changed Steam overlay settings to stop it using F12, changed it to F10 as well.

P.S. This thread is getting very runny by now. ;)

I came on this forum topic when trying to figure out how to screenshot of my :geek:. The members of the community were really helpful and gave me detailed advice on how to snap screenshots in the game. Even more advice was provided on how to enhance the screenshots' quality. I thought the conversation was really educational and like how inviting and kind the forum was. I'm appreciative of the contributors' time and effort in assisting me, and I'll undoubtedly return to this forum for more guidance.

I use Nvidia's function. For me it's F1 but I think F11 might do it if you hold it down.
