How is a star undiscovered but a planet is

While exploring the Galaxy I Found A system with a undiscovered star but the one earth-like planet is discovered. How is it possible to jump into a system and not have the star discovered

Before the FSS was introduced stars were not auto scanned. You had to sit and stare at the star for a bit before it was added to your data.

To elaborate a little further, the old honk would reveal the entire system and allow you to target planets. Whomever visited that system before you entered, honked, saw the ELW and flew out to scan it then left without scanning the main star. I'm guessing it was not listed as mapped since mapping wasn't a thing back then either.

Scanning the star was especially painful if you were exploring in an Anaconda or some other large ship with an atrocious Supercruise turn rate. A lot of cherry-pickers and credit-seekers flying those ships never bothered scanning the star as it took up too much precious time turning in towrds the star, wait for scan, then turning back away from the star again, all for very little credit reward.

It does mean that there's an awful lot of in-game and EDSM systems that are only partially explored, where the ELW (for example) is scanned but the star itself is not.

I only used to scan the star if I went for a complete system scan. If I was interested in specific planets in a system I didn't scan the star.

While traveling I saw no point either in scanning the star.

This right here is exactly how I have done roughly 15,000 systems :p
