Newcomer / Intro How is death handled..?

Hi all,

I am new to the forums, but have been following this game for along time and i am very near to buying. I am an older gamer who played hundreds of hours of Frontier Elite 2 back in the day on my old 486 :) So i know basically how this game works....Anyway with this being a persistent online universe i am wondering how death is handled in this new version? In Elite 2 of course you just had to load your last save...So what is the penalty (if there is one) for death?

Thanks for the info and i look forward to seeing you all out in the universe!

If you are flying the free beginner ship, you'll just go back to a star port, if you've purchased a ship, you'll have to pay reduced prize in insurance fees to get it back.

To expand upon what tomimt has explained, the buyback cost of your old loadout can be found in the right HUD monitor under your trader/combat/explorer ranks. Makes losing your multimillion credit ship a little less painful when all you have to do is pay back 5% of the original cost.

I believe all your bounties and exploration data is lost for good though so be mindful to collect often, particularly if you're taking on a lot of combat missions.

You start off in a basic Sidewinder. It's a great little ship and versatile enough for you to "try out" different career paths but is ultimately limited is excelling in any area due to size. But think of it as an introduction to the game. Use it to learn the mechanics. What not to do etc. Get a feel for the direction you want to take.

Every time you blow up your Sidewinder (not that you will!) you get another free of charge. So feel free to make any mistakes then as you gain more confidence you can start to gain some credits from trading, exploration, bounty hunting, bulletin board missions or (heaven forbid) pirating!

Once you get enough CR to buy your first 'real' ship then the game changes a little. You don't get that ship back unless you can cover the insurance with your remaining balance. Remember this golden rule now and forever. On your RH panel, on the first screen it details the buy-back cost. Never fly your ship if you can't afford it. It's also best if you have more than 2 or 3 times the money in your bank in case you have two accidents in quick succession. If you do blow your prize ship and you don't have the cash you are back in your free Sidewinder.

And that is basically how death works.

If you're an old-timer, like myself, then you might be interested in Mobius. It's a private group which focuses on PvE play rather than PvP. Forgive me if I am explaining too much but if you play in Open mode you will see everyone and effectively be in a PvP environment where anything goes. (PvP player vs player). As a new player you could potentially be the recipient of a lot of unwarranted grief. The Mobius group wanted to offer the same experience as meeting other real players in the galaxy but in a more friendly PvE (player vs environment) setting. So you 'should' not suffer any grief but still attain the benefits of meeting real people. There's also a solo mode if you are not interested in meeting anyone else.

Also, if you have any questions starting out feel free to ask in the newcomers forum, plenty of helpful people here.

Hope you jump in soon commander and remember, fly safe!

Awesome guys - thanks for such a quick response!

Being relegated to the starting ship and having to earn 5% of the cost of you lost setup to reclaim it seems pretty fair and reasonable to me...

it is critical that you understand the insurance mechanic or you will pay dearly! My advice is to never fly without having your re-buy cost covered w/ cash on hand. Don't buy a new ship until you have significantly more assets than the cost of the new ship.

I forgot to add.

If you are a time-served frontier player... you are going to LOVE this.

Thank you very much @cmdr lowest for the detailed info, i appreciate that alot :) I have been waiting for this game for a seriously long time, haha. I am 34 and i remember so fondly playing Frontier when i was like 13 to 15 or so (i put alot of time into it!) When i heard this was being made i was so damm happy. I have also backed SC but that is another 2 years away basically so i am ready to jump into Elite. My favorite ship used to be either a Cobra MkIII or the Viper - i know they are small for cargo and whatnot - but i was a master bounty hunter and was taking out huge ships with them, ah the memories... Anyway thanks again and i will see you in the 'verse :)

I've tried a few ships now but only felt comfortable in the Cobra so far. I should say the Sidewinder is a fantastic ship too. I feels like a mini-Cobra.

Hope you have fun out there. I don't think you will be disappointed.

There is no death in ED.
You do not die. You are ejected to the last station you were parked at. If there were death in ED, the screen would display a spinning gravestone.

Instead, is simply says your ship was destroyed.

Speak for yourself ;) I at least allow death to be a possibility :D

Try this to answer you question. ===>>> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=431507#post431507

Yeah, I suppose suicide is possible with a wipe of the save. :p

That's the idea - fail the ejection roll, wipe save. The chart takes into account situations that are more or less likely to result in rescue (ie being in Sol is safer than being 100 LYs from the nearest outpost). There's also a margin of error between "dead" and normal recovery in which you have to choose the sidewinder instead of buying back your ship (insurance loophole, those b**tards ;) )

Your response here makes me think you may not be understanding the insurance mechanic completely - to clarify, you cannot earn back the money for your lost ship. When you die, you've either got the 5% deductible in the bank and can pay it at that moment to get it back, or you choose to take the Sidewinder. Once you pick the Sidey that's it, hence the sage advice to never undock unless you have at least enough to cover the current rebuy cost of whatever you're flying.
