Newcomer / Intro How is death handled..?

Your response here makes me think you may not be understanding the insurance mechanic completely - to clarify, you cannot earn back the money for your lost ship. When you die, you've either got the 5% deductible in the bank and can pay it at that moment to get it back, or you choose to take the Sidewinder. Once you pick the Sidey that's it, hence the sage advice to never undock unless you have at least enough to cover the current rebuy cost of whatever you're flying.

Well, don't forget the 200,000 credit loan you can get towards it if you don't have enough in your account.

Ah ok yeah - i did get it slightly wrong, i thought initially you could take your time (with the sidewinder) and make the 5% if you did not already have it..Thanks for clearing that up! It seems a pretty fair penalty for death to me...On a side note, how many variations on space stations are there atm...from the vids i have seen only 1 type so far. And one other quick question if i may...I dont have and am not really planning on buying a HOTAS setup any time soon, i do however have a 360 controller...does this work well enough? Or is M/K better than a 360 controller...?

Again, thanks guys for all the info and responses - this seems like a very active and helpful forum/community and thats just great!
Rock on guys! :)

Well you can take your time in the sidewinder. You could stay in your sidewinder until you had 80 million credits if you really wanted, and that money will always be in your bank. It's just going to take you a while to earn that in a sidewinder.

When you die you get a one-time only deal to buy your ship back with the money in your bank. So it's best to save up for a ship, and then some, before you buy. What you shouldn't do is leave yourself totally skint after buying a ship because if you have a crash you won't be able to buy it back. (different ships handle slightly differently so crashing on your first take-off/docking can happen). There's no option to re-buy your ship back later, its a one-time, on death moment and if you don't have the money you're back in a sidewinder.

I actually saved up about half a million in the sidewinder and then transferred to a Cobra with a healthy balance left over. Then I continued adding upgrades to the Cobra over time.

360 Controller is fine. It's what I use, has plenty of buttons and joystick Axis to map almost all essential controls. If you need help with the mapping let me know.
