Newcomer / Intro How is ED, and is it worth getting?

Ahoy all,

I've known about ED for a while, however not done much research into it.
I'm curious if the game would meet my desired gameplay style.

In essence, I'm a PvP'er more so than anything else, PvP encompassing Piracy, Bounty-hunting/Mercenary style, scaling into the larger battles.

Although EVE Online is presently my main game, I have not come looking at ED as some sort of "different style of EVE", but rather looking for a slightly more attention-requiring and "active" sort of game.

Any advice?

Cheers,

Damascus

For an excellent appraisal of the current state of the game, check out this review in Ars Technica, the review does a great job of giving you an overview on what the game is, what it isn't, and what it is likely to become.

This is the first game I have played on-line, but I have been a long time Elite fan (ZX Spectrum, and so on), so when I could get ED I did. I am REALLY enjoying it. However, it is so big I have barely scratched the surface of a scratch on the surface.
If you play it in Open play, you can only join forces with 3 others (although you can work with groups, you only get benefits with your 3 wingmates), but you will see a lot of players in the game. Most will be helpful, some may ignore you, but there are thugs who will beat you up for the fun of it. You can play in Solo mode, but there are still NPCs who will attack you, so be careful. There isn't (as far as I know) any system to make sure you only get attacked by NPCs who are weaker than you, so be ready to run away ASAP. There is no specific end game, but you can set yourself realistic goals. There are three ways to get to Elite status (Combat, Trading, Exploring), you can go off exploring 400 Billion systems to look at (most are available, some are not for reasons FD has not divulged), so there is plenty to look at, you can go bounty hunting, or mining, or be a pirate (pretty much, if you can imaging it, and you have the resources, you can do it!). People who joined after game launch will all start off the same way, in a Sidewinder and not a lot of credits, so you will have to work at it to make progress, but as you get better so your options will open up. There are, at times, community goals (and there you can get the benefits with a lot of people), and occasionally goodies up for grabs (NVidia offered up 5 Titan X graphics cards to the first people who could get them to their in game HQ recently), and your actions do have effects (a friend and I saturated a commodity market, and the buying price fell through the floor!).
Fly safe, and see you out amongst the stars.
