How is oculus cv1 with a gtx 970?

I have an msi gaming gtx 970 and am tinking of getting oculus rift this autumn. How does it perform in elite dangerous? I hear stations and planets can be very taxing. What are settings do you typically need to play at to avoid this?

The game was playable (and I'm generally prone to nausea in games), at reduced settings, with my below-minimum-spec 960. I did not, however, actually benchmark and have since upgraded so no longer can test the older card.

It was very playable on my 970 using VR Low. Text is a bit fuzzy because you don't have the horsepower to supersample or even use the in game anti aliasing but changing its color makes a big initial difference.

Planet surface textures will look a bit plastic as well because of the low anisotropic texture filtering you have to use on VR Low to keep the frame rate up.

Async time warp will keep the experience fluid enough when the frame rate falls below 90.

Bottom line, go for it and you can upgrade your GPU at a later date.

Cool sounds playable. Im thinking of getting a gtx 1070 down the line, but i have no need in my 1080p monitor and waiting for prices to drop as stock becomes more widely available.

Yeah that's what I do, basically to get it to run smooth overall you have to run VR LOW with no SS or debug tool tweaks..
also you HAVE to change the hud colours otherwise it's quite exhausting trying to real all the fuzzy orange text.
I changed my HUD to a blueish one and it's a great improvement. I went back to the stock orange the other day just to compare and nearly puked.

I will say this though, - the only way I could get the game crisp enough to be a comfortable experience was when I used the oculus debug set to 1.5 or more.
This would apply to any situation, ED in VR needs a helping hand from the stock setup, no matter what, and my 970 can "just" about cope with the debug SS as long as I'm on VR LOW.

Unfortunately VR LOW is like kinda flat and dull looking, so that sucks.. I'm fairly confident I've tried everything possible to get the most out of my 970, but I'm looking to upgrade now, like during the next week or so, it seems the only card that will let me run the debug on SSx2 and graphics on high is the Titan X, but it's soo expensive.. I'm hoping the ED work some magic on the VR side soon.

Don't let any of that put you off, I'm still having a blast in VR with my 970, it does work and it is GREAT fun!!!
