How is 'report crimes against me' supposed to work?

So, I'm merrily (since it's Xmas) supercruising through a system and I get interdicted. I submit, since the FSD cooldown is quicker.

It's a dropship, and, as the NPCs have an intense penchant for melodrama he instantly starts with all the usual proclamations: "Fear me", "You're space dust" etc etc.

Anyway, he's wanted, and starts firing on me. I decide to stay and fight since there's a decent bounty if I'm successful.

But things don't go terribly well and I lose a lot of hull. Then the cops show up - I'd forgotten to disable "Report crimes against me".

"I'm saved!" I think to myself. "The cavalry is here!".

That's all pilot. Be about your business.

Ummm what?

They then proceed to fly around in circles completely oblivious to the fact 'my business' is currently that of being pummelled half to death by a wanted criminal.

I managed to jump away, leaving the Feds and the criminal to ... well whatever they were doing.

So .. what exactly does "report crimes against me" do? I'm assuming that's why the cops showed up in the first place. But just to scan me, then sit back and watch the entertainment?

If u turn report crimes against me off on the right screen panel the NPC security won't come and help u.

Hope this helped commander.

Easy one. With the option on your ship will report all crimes commited against it. so if someone (no Cop) shoots you he turns instant to wanted and gets a 200 Credit bounty. Same goes aperantly (from what i read) for the cargoscanner. You scan someone and he get a fine for carrying contrabrand or stolen goods.

If you have positive rep (not sure what the exact trigger is) cops come to your "aid" as in your case. Not always helpful.

I think his issue was that they didn't help him. If he was wanted the security forces would have potshotted him, but they didn't scan or attack the other wanted pirate. They should be acting differently.

Imho i'd bug report it.

This would be because so many people whined about the police showing up and killing "their" target and "stealing their bounty" instead of just turning off the "report crimes" thing... so now the police show up and DON'T shoot at your target. So unless you have 2+ attackers, they now basically show up to be an audience. If you want them to help you out, you could try deselecting the ship that's firing at you and trying to get away from him.

This is very probably what is doing it, and is causing heated debate between the omg a policeman stole my bounty crowd, and the a.i. should act like a.i. and not giver players preferential treatment crowd.

Yup. I'm in the second crowd... way too much hand holding going on lately in my humble opinion.

IMO 'report crimes against me' should be changed or split into two options because right now it's not very intuitive.

1.) The first effect is that it calls for aid when you are attacked ... well after a while, if you are lucky and then they might or might not help
2.) When the attacker is clean and the option is off, then the attacker doesn't get wanted and you get a bounty for attacking a clean even when you are not the aggressor which is pretty .

Crimes should always be reported. The option should then be renamed to 'Call for aid when attacked' which would make it's remaining purpose a lot more clear.

...

LOL!

Deliciously ironic.

This is not correct.

If you have 'report crimes against me' turned off, then the attacker does not get 'wanted' for attacking you, and therefore the police will not attack them.

This is the case whether the police are on-site or not.

The change made to prevent bounties from being sniped had nothing to do with changing their aggression behavior. The change was that if an NPC gets the killing blow against a ship that was attacked by a player in the previous ten seconds, the player still gets the bounty. IT did not change their AI about whom to attack in any way.

Thanks for the clarification. Does that imply then that the authorities are still summoned if the "report crimes against me" is turned off? And if they're failing to shoot at the person attacking you as the OP reports, of what use are they?

As far as I can tell, they are not summoned if you get shot illegally while 'report crimes against me' is off. In the scenario described in the OP, it looks like they showed up for another reason entirely. In this situation, it's possible that... nah, I have no idea why they didn't shoot at the aggressing NPC. Maybe they shared a faction? There's still some weirdness with factions and bounties and 'wanted' status that is being ironed out.

I'm pretty sure they turned up purely because I had 'report crimes' enabled. Normally I have it disabled, because when my buddy and I are hunting we don't want any trouble if we inadvertently hit each other.

As for why they didn't help me, your faction comment does make sense. I agree the faction stuff still needs some work. NPCs are still losing their faction when interdicting and that was supposedly fixed a few patches ago.

Will ticket.
