How is the alpha running?

I'm interested in Elite Dangerous, but I've not pledged yet as I'm worried that my current PC isn't going to be up to the task of running it. So I'm wondering how to alpha is running on peoples machines?

If it's running well could you post your specs so I have an idea of what hardware requirements I'll be looking at, please?

Thanks.:)

It runs like silk. The released specs for the Alpha appear to have been cautious, we've had people running it on everything from a top end PC, to 4 year old dual-core, to a tablet - with adjustments to graphical quality of course.

That sounds promising. The processor on my PC isn't bad (4.20 ghz 6 core processor) but I'm a bit worried about the graphics card.

So long as it's DX10 compliant, you shouldn't have a problem running it, though you might have to tune down the settings a bit.

My machine is a Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 4 GB DDR2 and a Radeon 6870. The alpha is running smoothly on 1920x1080 with FXAA, largest rendering distance and all quality settings on high. :)

Yep - I've got it running on a high end PC (see sig for spec) and a MacBook with an Nvidia 650M and with the right settings it runs very smooth on both of them.

However I would note a word of caution.. the current Alpha phase is only a combat test, so no multi-player, no networking etc. I will be interested to see the performance of it once all that stuff is put in and we can travel between systems etc.

Thanks. So it's looking like, if I get more RAM and a better GFX card, I'll be alright.. As far as the alpha goes, anyway.

Even during the last scenario?

Let's bear in mind though that what is running smooth as silk right now isn't really a game. There is nothing else running in the background as far as the rest of the galaxy is concerned other than your little corner of the galaxy. I will be interested to see if performance is maintained once they add stations, and AI pilots docking and leaving those stations etc.

I have no doubt that the demand on CPU and RAM will increase once the full features are added to the game, but I do think it's quite promising that the alpha is running well on a wide variety of machines with higher and lower specs.

I don't think CPU requirement will increase that much. They could up required performance from per core (to 2.4 Ghz for example), but 4 core requirement will stay. Remember, while playing online, background simulation is done by server, so requirements won't go up that much I think. Memory size could increase however, and I think offline play will require more resources too (due of limited parts of simulation done on PC itself).

But also let's remember that they haven't gone trough regular tweaking and optimizing of the game which usually happens at beta stage. So there still could places they can improve. They have amazing coders there.

Would anyone with the alpha running in high settings be willing to benchmark their PC?

I've benchmarked with Heaven (3DMark is bloatware to be honest and takes too long).

Heaven score: 946
GPU: XFX HD 6870 900MHz 1GB GDDR5
CPU: i5-3570K
MB: Asus P8Z77-V
RAM: G-Skill 16GB DDR3 @ 2133MHz

Thanks, Atari. That benchmark is useful.

I scored 1118

Average FPS 44.4, Min FPS 21.1, Max FPS 93.2

Processor: AMD-FX 6300 six core processor @ 3.5 Ghz (according to the manufacturer, it's supposed to boost up to 4.1Ghz, but I've not yet seen it do that. Perhaps I've just not stressed it enough yet)

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 650 TI Boost 2GB (though the benchmark and DXDIAG say I have 3GB, so 1GB of system memory must be used for graphics)

8GB RAM.

I've been told it's a decent enough PC (though I suspect it could use more RAM and a better graphics card). I'm not 100% sure as I bought it on a whim as a replacement for my Xbox 360 because I didn't fancy Xbox One or PS4 (both of those consoles seem pretty desperate to me). I used to be a PC gamer about 8 years ago, but I've spent the time since then in the murky waters of console gaming and I'm trying to find my way back to some decent games... Got really sick of all the generic shooters on Xbox 360 . As a result I'm a bit out of the loop with PC hardware and what I should expect from this PC.

This PC was listed as a gaming PC, was in my price range, so I thought I'd give it a try. Mostly I've been messing around with indie titles downloaded from Steam. The most graphics intensive games I've ran on it so far are Batman Arkham City and it runs fine and X-Plane 10 and it runs fine too. I did try X-Rebirth and it ran really badly, but I've since learned that it runs badly on everything...

that's the point_: is very early to say ''this is a good pc to run it, or this is not.. etc..''

we must be patient and wait at least until the first beta.
Then... maybe we can have a little impression of what we should (lol) buy to play this amazing game.

Hi peteuplink, my pc scores 1086 on Heaven, similar to yours. I'm making a series of videos trying out different settings for my pc HERE. I'll keep updating throughout alpha, and take requests. I reckon you'll get similar perfoermance

Looks good :) Can you show the FPS your getting in ED?

If in doubt, run something like Fraps. I wonder if anyone has a 120 Hz display and is getting framerates in the 100s?

The alpha is running very well for me, very stable and polished, and I get around 48fps on final scenario.
Intel core I7 920@2.7ghz
6gb ram
Nvidia 560gtx-ti-hawk 1gb

Shok.
