If you're wondering about how multiple people could fly a ship in an arena, or in combat generally, there's plenty of games that can give you a good idea behind how it could work.
One I would recommend is a game I played for a while on Steam, called: Guns of Icarus

Ignoring the fact that it is set in a steam punk style type of game (more fantasy than space reality), but focusing on the style of the gameplay and the way it is played.
The crew of each ship hafve to actively manage all the systems, but more importantly be very organised in their duties and who is going to cover what area.
It's a lot of fun - though not as much fun as ED, of course!
