Newcomer / Intro How many credits do I need for a Cobra?

Many thanks!

There was a blackmarket, so I sold the superconductors, and exited the system. Now - you mention an Adder - how about going back to the hauler? i was doing fairly well with that.

Off the shelf the Adder is better than the Hauler in everything except jump range which is 5 less. When there was an incident with a player stuck on a planet after his ship exploded I went along to help out in an Adder, it was some 1500 light years.

It is a great little ships and one of the most manoeuvrable in the game.

Just think of it as the Hauler after it has been to the gym (a lot).

Don't fret about buying and selling modules unnecessarily as long as you don't leave them in the hull when you sell it you always get all your money back.

And remember you can use this site https://coriolis.io/outfit/adder to compare ships and decide which modules you want.

Lol! :D

I think of the Adder more like as if Eagle and Cobra had an offspring. :)

But I agree with everything you said. Adder is one of the few ships I will NEVER sell.

Cool I will have to try one, [up]
I really like the Sidewinder and the Cobra III just seems to hit all the high notes for me, I raced my Cobra to Jacques

So Chris do you like it better than the Cobra III?

Well. I always hated to "go with the flow", so my main problem with the Cobra is that everyone likes it and uses it. :D
I love Cobra Mk.IV, though.

So for me, yes, Adder is better than Cobra. Like I said she isn't better than Cobra in any particular job, plus she has smaller windows than WWII tank. :)
But to me, she has much more personality.
Plus folding wings, sexy butt and great sound.

It is a smaller ship so you do have to watchout for other people parking too close.

An incident on "Planet Wilson" that occurred whilst I was out in my SRV. Neither of us blew up and he did transfer some fuel to me later.

great screen shot aRJay and that sure was an adventure,
I watched that from the start and it was the coolest thing I have ever seen on a game forum,
I should have ran out to help but real life seems to rule.. :)

You are right it was such a wonderful adventure to follow.

I was just going to watch from the sidelines then my Mac broke and started running slower than an overheated Spectrum, so I had to get a quick replacement and Horizons. I chose the Adder in part to add to the list of visiting ships, I arrived just after the Rescue Party had escaped the canyons.

Update.

I'm beginningto find that one of the more enjoyable things about this game is the learning curve! Two things have transpired since I last posted in this thread: -

I've solved the jump problem - it was because I was carrying cargo, which increased ship mass, and therefore decreased range. It happened again, mid-mission, and i was faced with dumping cargo and getting another fine, but luckily the system I was in had a shipyard and i was able to upgrade my FSD, power plant etc. to 3A which has solved the problem it seems.

Secondly - I was puzzled as to why I couldn't seem to afford a Cobra - I could when I first attempted to buy one, and easily - then I realised I was misreading the ship cost by a factor of 10, I have about 1.3 M CR (plus current ship) which is easily enough. I have, however, decided to stay with the Viper for a while, maybe amass enough CR to keep it when I do go for a Cobra.

Learning all the time - and loving it!

With regard to carrying cargo, worth noting that if you plot a route before you buy / load up some cargo, you can sometimes then find that you then can't make the route because the extra weight of the cargo has made your ship too heavy BUT if you re-plot the route sometimes it will be able to route via another star system and still get you there.

Not just to buy the base ship, but to upgrade and equip it well enough to make it a worthwhile step up from the hauler. I have a pretty well upgraded hauler now, and about 300,000 CR, so it's tempting to go for it soon, but I'm concerned it will be a backward step if I can't upgrade systems, cargo capacity etc,. straight away.

I found that once I got into the Cobra Mk 3, with its increased cargo cap and jump range the credits started piling up fast and I worried a lot less about how I was going to afford upgrades. And it was a heck of a lot of fun to fly, I might get another.

Once in your Cobra, consider long and carefully before making your next ship purchase. The Cobra Mk 3 is a great ship, a good earner (upgrade power distribution and FSD first, leave the guns OFF and if interdicted RUN, FORREST RUN!). You can save up a lot of credit in a fairly short period of time if you stay in it and do not go crazy switching ships early on. I did not move up from my Cobra until I could afford a T-6, then an Asp-X, then a Python, now flying an Anaconda and I think it was a good decision, have never seen the inside of a Hauler or Adder.

This ^^
Re-plotting is now automatic. All you need to do is open your galaxy map.

Also, OP, worth noting - there is a slider in the galaxy map (under the economic/fastest routes tick boxes) where you can set the virtual cargo tonnage see your laden jumprange and reachable systems, and let the computer plot the route with that in mind. Even before you buy/get the actual cargo.

Oh, dear. :D
A fine mess you've gotten yourself into.

Okay, first thing - stop panicking. A fine won't hurt for some time, unless you get wanted.
Check system map if one of the stations, outposts or planetary bases has a Black market. If they do, go there and sell the stuff. That'll minimize the damage. Otherwise space it.

Next thing you should do is get out of the system.
You have two options. Either you embrace the Viper, buy some guns and go earn money the hard way, or you can buy something smaller (Adder, for example) that can jump better and you can afford to outfit it properly.

If you decide to fight, find a planetary ring with Resource extraction sites, or a Nav Beacon next to the star, drop there and wait for a bit (I suspect you're not that experienced in fighting, if you just came out of the Hauler) Once System security ships start fighting the pirates, join in, carefully. All you need to do target the pirate, wait until you clearly see they're wanted and that they are NOT in a wing, wait until cops almost kill them and then land a couple of shots in the last 10 seconds of the fight. You'll get the bounty. If it is a High intensity site, the bounties vary from 5k (Sideys) to 150k (Anaconda), so you should be set soon enough.
One word of caution, though - if you die, you'll be returned to the station that issued the fine, which means it will get added to your rebuy costs. Do'¨t worry too much. You have about 600k that you can use as a loan to pay the insurance (even repeatedly)

If you decide for an Adder or something like that, just outfit it and get out of the system, then keep doing whatever you were doing in a Hauler. :)

If you can be online around 11pm galactic time (yeah, I know it's late), I could come over and help you. Otherwise good luck!

Alternatively you can fly out the airlock, "self-destruct" and start back at the beginning, with a new, free sidewinder and whatever credit balance you have now. I did it a half-dozen times before I got the hang of the game, the last time I think I re-started with over 12 million credits. Don't remember why I didn't re-buy, probably ship-type. Immediately bought an Asp-X, upgraded everything to "A" and went back to work.

Touchwood, don't feel bad about such mistakes. This is not an easy game. I've run out of fuel twice before I learned how to plot routes properly [sour] I was bankrupted few times too. Worst case: start over.

Like you said the steep learning curve appears to be part of the fun. Masochistic fun perhaps, but hey. I was never so mad at a game as I was after losing my Cobra and all cargo+fines over and over few times.
