how many inhabitied stars are there?

There is definitely more than 6.
With all these thousands of inhabited systems, be it by station or planet etc, how do they communicate from the faction centers to their extremities? By courrier or by some FTL means? Cant be by radio.
I'd be interested to know which planets are inhabited other than earthlike if any.
