How many kills per rank?

No doubt this has been asked countless times, I just can't find the answer.

How many kills are required to rise through the ranks? I'm not getting to play the game very much, and am almost embarrassed to admit I've only got 8 kills, but was kind of expecting to have risen to the heady heights of mostly harmless by now, but nothing has happened.

It doesnt use simple kill numbers as the way of ranking up, it also takes into account the type of ship and level of opposition.

A harmless sidewinder will be worth far less than an elite anaconda, both in terms of bounty, and in terms of rank advancement.

Just to give you an idea, I just moved from Novice to Competent with 295 kills and 2 million in bounties.

15 kills and 170k in bounties to get from harmless to mostly harmless. mostly cobras and vipers, one clipper and one python. i will be updating whenever i change cause a lot of people ask this and i'm paying attention.

i am however useless in combat and only fight if interdicted. so it may take a while :D
