How many NHSS are considered "normal"?

I've not played any of the Thargoid-related content to date (short of a visit to Maia and the Adamaster ghost ship). But I was taking a tour of the rimward(?) nebulae (Pelican, North American, Cave, NGC 7822, etc.), and decided to make a detour and check out the Orion Complex on my way back.

This was my first visit to the area and after selling my cartography data at an asteroid base in the Running Man Nebula, my next stop was Witchhead, and having a Guardian FSD booster onboard, I didn't want to run the risk of getting hyperdicted and losing my data.

I stopped in a system with a good view of the Witchhead Nebula to grab a screenshot and decided to scan the system. 15 orbital bodies...60 signal sources. I didn't scan every USS, but given the 20 or so I did scan, I imagine it's safe to assume all 60 were NHSS.

Is this number normal? A friend was telling me the Thargoid homeworld hasn't been found yet (I imagine it's either in the Horsehead Nebula or somewhere within the Great Wall of Col 70). Not that I think this is it, just curious if this concentration of NHSS is normal or not.

More plausible than the reference system the Link & Probe use in Col 70? That was always my choice 🤷‍♀️
Also plausible, but given the Thargoid dependence on barnacles which so far only appear to show up around nebulae, it'd be odd for them to have a home system elsewhere.

If the "two sorts of Thargoid" theory is true, then of course it could be both - one sort that lives in the Cone Nebula, and one sort which has been kicked out and reluctantly lives in Col 70 to raid the Pleiades, Witch Head and Coalsack for barnacle farming, and was hoping to move to one of them before it turned out to be inconveniently already inhabited.

Tinfoil theory: as our only source for the "two sorts of Thargoid" theory is apparently communication with one of the sorts of Thargoid, which claims to be the more peaceful sort, what if they're lying? The Thargoids we meet are actually the warlike expansionists trying to claim various other nebulae, and the peaceful ones are just happily staying at home in the plentiful Cone Nebula having kicked the others out. The warlike Thargoids intercepted the Gnosis to ensure we wouldn't discover the truth.

Having guardian modules installed does not affect hyperdiction rate and also does not anger them, so don't worry about that.

Good to know. I'm assuming I can also probe them and scan them without worrying about getting smoked? This is an area of gameplay I've avoided because I'm not familiar with what triggers them. I admit to some interest in anti-xeno ops, but unless we get an actual invasion, I have other priorities at the moment (like chasing tall tales lol).

Given the apparently considerable longevity of the Thargoid civilization it's possible their home system no longer exists and the species is entirely nomadic, like army ants for example. I'm looking to do Ram Tah's second mission in the not too distant future so acquiring tissue samples would be my focus when the time comes.

Probing them? No, nah, if you do that be prepared to RUN :D

In Asterope last night there were dozens of NHSS. But whether that's normal or not I couldn't say, it was only my second visit. :D I believe it is, as that is what I went there for.
