How many players will ED realistcally have?

Depends on good PR the big hitters reviewing it (IGN, for one - they don't seem to have covered much about it yet on their site). And where it ends up on MetaCritic. It's a sad inditement of today's gaming industry but MetaCritic means a lot.

There is a fantastic film out there worth watching called 'Indie Game: The Movie' - it's quite interesting how these things work.

If Elite : Dangerous is ported to PS4, then that would seriously increase the player base.

I voted for a million... eventually. I don't think EVE is a good comparison. I played EVE in the early days and loved it but the appeal of the game waned because of the lack of universe expansion - it is small, and there has been no real sense of adventure in the game for years now, possibly since around '05 despite the "expansions" The last time I renewed my subscription was over a year ago now. It is not the same type of game as Elite at all.
FD have said that there will not be an Elite V as such but they will just keep improving E:⁠D. If that is true I think it will start well and over the years continually increase.
