How many PS4 users are likely to play Elite:Dangerous?

Now that 2.3 is live, the next big Frontier development will be upcoming PS4.
Given that Sony announced that they were at circa 55Mil consoles sold in Jan 2017 (with every indication that it'll be a lot higher now), how many users are likely to play the game?

A 0.5% - 1% uptake in the game would see an additional 500,000+ users.

A lot of developers have had launch issues with the spike of new users suddenly hitting the back-end servers. Elite is a solely online game so users won't be able to drop to a local /offline copy if the servers were down. Can the Elite servers take this sort of additional load?

How big does everyone think will Elite:Dangerous be?

If Sony promotes it well it will probably be massive. It if works better than 2.3 Live with the current bugs it will be even greater! Hopefully FD incorporated the advanced player communications on the Playstation.

Dav was pretty confident about the influx of players for today's event on the live stream earlier in the week. Hopefully all those detractors we read about every day in 'Dangerous Discussion' will have made lots of room for us all on the servers ;-)

well i have the money and read all the background and even watch over 50+ hours of youtube to prepare, all i need now is the game and i will never play another game again for at least 2-3 years

I'm on the fence, but I'm leaning heavily that way. I just picked up a PS4 Pro (my launch day PS4 bit the dust, sadly), and think ED would run incredibly on it. The two things that could sway me are HOTAS (which we know it will have baked into the game) and VR (which everyone presumes will be supported either at or shortly after it comes to the platform.) My main problem with playing it from the console is difficulty reading the screen from across the room (I'm old, kinda comes with the territory.) I love it on XB1, but not being able to clearly read the screen has lead to some rather poor decisions that rarely end well for me.

I've considered it for the PC, but can't sit at the desk for long durations anymore due to a bad back. It's more convenient for me to play from the sofa, which is why I play far more console games than PC these days. Now, in a perfect world, the PS4 version would not only solve the HOTAS and VR desires but also introduce some of the elements from the PC modding community like customizable UI colors, voice command recognition and text-to-speech support. If they could pull all those threads together, the PS4 version could be the ideal platform for the game.

I'm choosing to remain cautiously optimistic as we get closer to PS4 roll-out.

Considering how many consoles sold, I am fairly sure a good chunk of people will be joining, now Elite is still more of a niche game then main stream so maybe not that many, but certainly I think a sizable number.

I think it's going to be big - hopefully covering all the cost to port it and more - they just need to squish all the 2.3 bugs first ;-)

It would be interesting to get the stats for No Man's Sky when it was first released on PS4. I'm guessing ED numbers will be on parity or higher. Ironically, NMS's legacy might be a blessing or a curse. Some people are "once bitten, twice shy" thanks to NMS's broken promises. Other people like myself will think, "Finally, THIS is the game I've been waiting for!"

Does anyone know if Frontier localizes ED for the Asian market? Playstation is HUGE in Japan and Korea (maybe China too, I don't know). I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't, because it's a ton of work. I bet there will be plenty in that demographic who would grab the english version of ED, if Sony allows it.

Let's also not forget to factor in the burned out CoD players (especially CoD:IW) (or anyone looking for a fast paced game). They might remember the space combat sections and how fun they were and think "Doing that full time? Sign me up!" only to realize that you start with a ship with 52 MJs of shields (that's not much), two small gimbaled Pulse lasers, and 1000 credits. Their first few kills might net them with a few hundred to a thousand credits and get disgusted by the fact that they hardly made much money. There are plenty of people complaining on the main forums that FDEV are nerfing the cash rewards. They aren't. It's a rebalancing. For those people who set goals and have patience, then they will become hardcore fans and I'll welcome them.

i remember playing elite 2, and for the first 2 hours getting owned by every pirate that saw me. but i carried on and got better until i could hold my own against most ships, never got to elite status though but it was fun. so roll on ps4 ED day one, can't wait :D

My Sidewinder comes with GIMBALED pulse lasers? Awesome!! (I thought they were fixed.)

If I recall from the first days, they were. But be careful with Gimballs. If you lose the target's Thermal Signature (Chaff, Heat Sink, Silent Running) then you have to fire without a weapons lock and relock once you reestablish a Signature.

Also: here's the stats on the Sidewinder you start with.

Go ahead and play around with the tool so you can get a grasp as to how loadouts work.

Additional: you can transfer parts from one ship to the next. If you move into a Eagle but love your gimbals then Storing your parts and transferring the weapons to the Eagle will give you a better leg up on the competition and sell the original parts from the new ship! Cash!

Will we ever get to the point where all platform commanders are visible to each other ? or will ps4 and mac always remain separate?

Most likely we'll be separate but I think there were rumors that Sony and Microsoft wanted to go Cross-platform and the jump to Console to PC isn't that big a deal (Shadowrun did it when it was an arena shooter). I don't know what's happened with that as I haven't heard any news on the subject.

Amazing; thanks for this! Is a gimbal a separate component or part of the overall weapon?

PlayStation has announced 60 million consoles "sold" in it earnings report. My take on how well ED will do has a lot of factors. Elite Dangerous is the game people were hopping for in No Mans Sky and much more. First its true multiplayer and that was the first thing that people mentioned when complaining about No Mans Sky. What other games come out around ED is very important, the avg PlayStation owner has a limited amount of expendable income. Big titles launching to close together will take possible sales away from one or the other. Getting the advertisement out a E3 showing will boost sale even if the game is launched before E3. FD has Youtube pushing the game already, but no gaming sites are talking Elite Dangerous. VR will have a huge impact if its available on ED with around 1 million of them in use now on PS4. I feel its possible that ED could hit 1 million in sales on PlayStation over a few months. We will have also to see how people take the learning curve.

With the total lack of news and marketing I'd be amazed if ed gets half nms sales! :(

As good as it is (I love it!) it really is a marmite game and with zero marketing it will probably only sell slightly better than xbox mainly due to the larger install Base.

Don't forget most of the console players that were desperate for ed are already playing it on xbox! I bought my mine for forza and elite tbh :)

Frankly, I don't think ANYONE is promoting it to any extent. There have been a couple of articles but nothing I would term, 'marketing' to any extent. I stumbled across it by accident my self late last year and everything I have I got form these forums - and youtube.
