How many PS4 users are likely to play Elite:Dangerous?

i found out by accident searching youtube for no man's sky news and found the trailer for elite dangerous coming q2. since then ive been getting as much information as possible, been more fun doing research for ED than playing no man's sky lol

Even if you research everything on E: D, you aren't prepared. The first time you mistake your landing gear and hit the Boost, you may laugh or rage. I actually ragequit a long time ago because I failed a docking attempt and slammed full throttle under the docking corridor. Full cargo hold. Don't remember how much I lost but I left for a while after that.

Then there are the bugs... If you think Bethesda bugs are funny. Oh boy... Try flying through a ring system looking for targets and having an Anaconda randomly firing its Plasma Accelerator at anything or seeing a ship mining empty space (with the pilot name: Isaac Newton).

Amazing; thanks for this! Is a gimbal a separate component or part of the overall weapon?
Gimbal is the mounting type. Fixed weapons have a VERY limited arc of fire but hit the hardest while being the cheapest. Gimbals have a 22 degree arc of fire and have medium damage for the weapon type (Pulse Laser, Multicannon, etc.) and have a moderate cost. Turrets have the lowest damage, cost the most, but have a full view of their position. Each mounting is best suited for different tasks. If you have great aim and agility then a Fixed weapon may be your best option. Gimbals and Turrets are great if you lack agility or aren't that great at targeting.

If you like to snipe then the Rail gun will be your buddy. It's Hitscan like a laser and has a high Piercing value so you can knock out modules like that pesky Shield Generator or the Frameshift Drive.

I'm waiting for my PS4 Pro which will form my Elite Dangerous machine and is one of the main reasons for its purchase.

Thats exactly what happened to me and i was a VERY happy bunny that day!

Now that 2.3 is live, the next big Frontier development will be upcoming PS4.
Given that Sony announced that they were at circa 55Mil consoles sold in Jan 2017 (with every indication that it'll be a lot higher now), how many users are likely to play the game?

A 0.5% - 1% uptake in the game would see an additional 500,000+ users.

A lot of developers have had launch issues with the spike of new users suddenly hitting the back-end servers. Elite is a solely online game so users won't be able to drop to a local /offline copy if the servers were down. Can the Elite servers take this sort of additional load?

How big does everyone think will Elite:Dangerous be?

As many as those that want to!

There's no back end servers.

ED is Peer2Peer architecture. They use Amazon's AWS for PC.

PS4 will use Sony Network P2P servers.
You know how big Sony is correct?

It will be Bigly Yuge!

Do I get a prize now?

ED is Peer2Peer architecture...

Are you sure about that? ED has the BGS server and a few other servers that kept details about your commander. I'm pretty sure only PvP combat is P2P. Otherwise solo could be played offline.
