It's a bit of a strange system that seems to have taken legacy components and retrofit them into what's here now.

Looking at your loadout I would...

Have KWS and weapons on one fire group

Manifest scanner and weapons on a second

Data link and disco on a third

Disco and data (I think) need to be in analysis mode
All others need combat mode

I think...

Pick one scanner.
Play about with it.
If you're struggling to get one to work, don't overcomplicate by equipping them all.
Stick with one, ask questions, figure it out, move on to next.

what do you want to scan?

sorry, op, it's ... complicated.
i would explain but it's too boring and embarrassing, besides i've never used the composition scanner myself, so check out those videos.

You don't need anything other than the scanner already built into the ship to scan unidentified objects. The other scanners generally scan what they state (kill warrants, frame-shift wakes, etc.).

There's a reason I only gave two examples. :p

The composition scanner scans compositions, obviously. Generic compositions. Any composition'll do.

I have only used the composition scanner on planet surfaces to scan biological and geological points of interest. That marks them as discovered and puts them in the codex. I don't know if it has other uses.
