How many ships

Hi i have bean searching trying to find out how many ships players will be able to own at the same time .
.i.e. is it possible to make lots of cash and be able to own all the player ships at the same time or do we have to trade one in to buy a new one :S

You can own multiple ships, but you must pay rent to park them up and you can only fly 1 ship at a time.

I'm not aware of any limits on the number of ships you can own

It would be logical that the players can possess the 25 spaceships planned in the first version of the game and certainly other spaceships in the following versions. But, to possess several Cobra MK III, would be possible?

I would imagine yes you can own several ships of the same type, like 6 cobra mark 3's (or 4's?? :D )
Indeed not a bad idea as each could be outfitted to the role it plays in your style...Like one cobra mk 3 for bounty hunting, one for trading etc...

One of the things to factor in is the logistics involved. Since you only travel in one ship the other ships are going to have to be "garaged" somewhere and then collected by you or transported to you. In a galaxy the size of Elite if you do any exploring that's going to involve massive distances and presumably high costs. I am expecting to max out at one or two ships at a time.

Yes i was thinking of at least 4 ship classes each configured for different roles , then when i have lots of cash maybe make sure i try and buy one of every ship .

I think storage, maintenance and transport charges are going to,limit the number of ships you can own, I hope it's really expensive to keep more than one ship so that people DO have to specialise and can't have many ships all kitted out for different purposes.

Yep, people will, in my opinion, only have 1 ship for quite some time and possibly only get their second or third ship as a gift for completing a task.
I think that the first ship will be sold in order to help pay for their upgrade to a better ship.
Maybe after a year will you consider buying and storing a ship rather than selling your old one but it depends on the amount of damage it has sustained.

yeah thinking the same thing... horses for courses

I would also have a Gold Cobra MkIII for special occasions :D

Anyway, we cannot buy spaceships as we buy one liter of milk every morning. It will be necessary to sweat, some blood and tears, to have several spaceships

:p

Wow if buying ships is going to be that easy i will have a fleet of ships in days , i thought it may have taken weeks or months . But a lot of sweat blood and tears and making lot of cash makes my day .;)

Apart from your first, is the purchase of a ship the only way to 'acquire' one?

There must be a "theft" mechanism of some form to enable the "pirate" starting option of having a stolen Cobra.

I remember DB saying stuff about stowing away on ships or flat out stealing them out of stations. I'm very curious whether that mechanic will make it into the game.

See im surprised he said that as it sounds like a bloody stretch goal for Star Citizen if im honest and not something that DB would say :p

Not necessarily. All they would need to do is set your starting legal standing as Offender or Fugitive to simulate the repercussions of stealing the Cobra.

Stealing ships is planned although i suspect it will be NPC ships rather than other players, again i would hope that it is very difficult, for a start a big ship requires a crew.

That far into the future i would hope security is more sophisticated (and more lethal?) than just locks and keys, genetic scanners face recognition, voice recognition etc etc.

Stealing a ship should be a major technical operation, even boarding one and killing it's crew could no net you anything useful if you don't know the codes to activate the controls and can't hack the computers especially if the ship is doing things like switching off the lights, life support and opening hatches while you try it.

Zero ships?

Will it also be possible to have no ship?
I can envisage lots of ways one could lose ones ship (given the number of posts that mention it, having it stolen could be the biggest one!). So what happens then? Do we have to become one of the those people who need to request transport via the bulletin board to get to the next star system? Or become part of someone else's crew? Do we become one of those homeless and shipless old folk that inhabit the seedy corners of distant star ports?
