4 times........

once due to biting off more than i could chew with an anaconda whilst i was in a base sidey, once by an addrer interdiction, it seems i cheesed off the police and got major ganked, once due to a ghost keypress on my flight stick after i plugged into wrong usb and finally once due to me being an idiot trying to boost out of a station and got it wrong

Twice, both while new to the game and figuring stuff out.

First time trying to smuggle goods into the port. I had seen videos of people doing silent running to get things in through the letterbox, so I decided to do the same and just float along with flight assist off. Needless to say, I got scanned, panicked tried to boost into the station and clipped the side sending me off into a spiraling death.

The other time was when I was caught out of fuel with no fuel scoop and nothing but a star. I had just made my most expensive purchase of cargo and so really didn't want to die. I tried to use FSD to make it to the next star. I ran out of Fuel, FSD cut out and I spent a very lonely 5 minutes in deep space until my oxygen ran out and I died.

Maybe 4 times? 3 when trying to dock too fast, and once when I took on someone I had no business taking on. Oh, and once from running out of fuel when I had to hit self destruct. I think I've learned all the lessons to avoid dying from stupidity... but I'm sure there will be more.

Unlike in Elite or Frontier (remember the spinning tombstone), it is impossible to die in this game. Once I had my ship destroyed, I think by a collision with something I did not see.
All that happened was I lost my cargo and had to pay a small amount to get a ship exactly the same as the one that got destroyed. I still had all my money in the bank and all my rep and ranks. Definitely not dead. Not even a little bit.
I can't wait for Iron-man to be implemented. Until then I am kind of enjoying being a god-like immortal among other immortals... But it is getting a bit.... I dunno, inevitable.... Ooops, I died.... no wait... nothing happened. Why bother avoiding it?
Ok... I think I can feel a slightly unwarranted whiny rant coming on. Stopping now. Back to the game...

I've died five times - Three times in combat, and once getting hammered by a big heavy transporter whilst I was trying to exit a spaceport and it decided to enter. It sort of flattened me against the outside mesh on the station and I was pinned - no where to go. I was really angry at the time as I was just leaving after a re-buy from one of my failed combat excursions so it was in fact a brand new ship that got squashed! Fortunately, I just had enough credits for another re-buy. You can bet that I was much more careful exiting the station after that.

The other time I died was pure comedy - I was trying to sneak into a station with "stolen" items before being scanned. Near the entrance to the station I pressed the boost button - ended up entering the station with a speed of 400 and couldn't stop before hitting the other end... Ouch!

*shot authority by mistake while gunning for a wanted, now I run instead of shooting back
*1st time docking inside a station, hit boost by mistake while coming into the docking entrance
*thinking i could take on 3 reds at the same time in the starter ship

I think the amount of death you should expect mostly depends on what you plan to do and how well you fly

I've died three times, I think. Once to CMDRs after I nicked someone with friendly fire and got a 200 cr bounty. Tried to land at an outpost, but that outpost was BUSY. Landing request denied and I made some huge rookie mistakes. Tried to hide by going silent. By that I mostly mean tried to hide by removing my shields for them. Then I tried to run sans shields. I did not get away. I hope they spent the 200 cr on something fun.

Second time I was listening to music and was distracted enough to enter a station without requesting landing permission. I was so surprised that I panicked and hit the side of the slot trying to get out too fast. A couple seconds of calm maneuvering would have had me out with time to spare. Station guns are merciless.

The third time I was in a conflict zone. I had been doing reasonably well until I collided with an enemy viper in a full speed turn.

Fun times.

Only twice. Day 1 and I go running around the galaxy in my new freagle exploring--get blown up by two NPC cobra's in the same hour.

Had a really cool moment on Day 1 when I jumped into a system and--I dunno if it was an NPC or a player--but I took a hit and all my systems shut down. Dead in the water. I sat there in shock, minute by minute, watching the player taunt me before scanning me and flying away. Realized he shut down my life support and reapplied power to it just as my oxygen was running out. Now that's a pirate!

Lots in beta, once in gamma I think, twice so far in live. Once when an NPC suicide rammed me and once when another CMDR caught me with a small bounty on my head in his clipper on the way back to the station and I couldn't run fast enough.

7 times... all while I was partaking of a few alcoholic beverages.

Once in a Type-6 loaded with 102(?) tons of Palladium... accidental boosting in station.

6 times in a ASP... one , yet another drunken Boosting while inside a station loaded with goods.
the other times one was a station hiccup that caused the mailslot to move 30 meters as i approached it at a semi-high rate of speed. (kinda like those Jumping trees that drunk drivers plow into)

the other times were drunken combat....

i seem to notice a pattern here...

Three times.
Once was because I got up to use the bathroom and my docking computer flew me into the side of the station.
Once because I accidentally fired while inside a station.
Once because I launched from a station and then went into the galaxy map to decide where to go next and idled too long and was destroyed by the station.
