In systems that are close proximity to Sol there will be little or no chance of getting jumped by NPC attackers I would imagine. However some other players might want to grab a quick kill if you're just starting out to up their status. Unless the devs add some kind of 'no fire zones' in starting systems (and when I say 'no fire zones' I mean not being able to activate or fire weapons) or have heavy police patrols that would make a player with a high elite status looking for an easy kill refrain from even trying to start a fight then I can see a lot of griefing going on against newcomers.
However, don't let that put you off. Get some practice in. Play a few space sims and get the feel of them.
The good thing I've noticed about space sims is that you rarely find immature gamers looking looking to ruin anyone's fun. Most space sim vets like myself (back in '85 I scored my first kill in my old Cobra... I was only ten at the time but still

) take these sorts of games seriously and don't go out to cause chaos against other players. Had a great community during my XvT days and used to have some legendary battles with some skilled pilots.
OP, my advice is don't worry too much about NPC attackers. If the old Sol-Bernard's Star trading run is still there (for old time sake) then you'll have enough creds for a pimped out Cobra Mk3 with little time and effort.
