How much combat?

Simple question really..... how often would you expect to be attacked? assuming you are a peaceful, legal trader, in reasonably peaceful systems. For me, the game will be mostly about the trading and exploring rather than MDK.

Secondly, will there be docking computers?

How often you are attacked in a relatively peaceful system I think will depend on a. how valuable a cargo you are carrying. b. how well your ship is armed and c. the aggression of human players desperate to increase their elite rating as quickly as possible :D Of all three possibilities I think c will be the deciding factor in how often you are attacked. I just hope that Frontier have something in place to deal with overly aggressive players.

The inclusion of docking computers is something that I was desperately hoping for when the game was originally announced considering that I was pretty hopeless at docking in the original game on the BBC. Having seen quite a few videos of docking in this version of the game though leads me to believe that the procedure will be reasonably straight forward so I am not too bothered about having one unless I upgrade to a more difficult ship to handle then it'll be the first thing I install ;).

In systems that are close proximity to Sol there will be little or no chance of getting jumped by NPC attackers I would imagine. However some other players might want to grab a quick kill if you're just starting out to up their status. Unless the devs add some kind of 'no fire zones' in starting systems (and when I say 'no fire zones' I mean not being able to activate or fire weapons) or have heavy police patrols that would make a player with a high elite status looking for an easy kill refrain from even trying to start a fight then I can see a lot of griefing going on against newcomers.

However, don't let that put you off. Get some practice in. Play a few space sims and get the feel of them.

The good thing I've noticed about space sims is that you rarely find immature gamers looking looking to ruin anyone's fun. Most space sim vets like myself (back in '85 I scored my first kill in my old Cobra... I was only ten at the time but still ;)) take these sorts of games seriously and don't go out to cause chaos against other players. Had a great community during my XvT days and used to have some legendary battles with some skilled pilots.

OP, my advice is don't worry too much about NPC attackers. If the old Sol-Bernard's Star trading run is still there (for old time sake) then you'll have enough creds for a pimped out Cobra Mk3 with little time and effort.
