How much fun is Elite Dangerous without joystick & tracker?

Joystick gives a slight advantage in combat, but headtrack isn't even remotely needed.

Plain mouse & keyboard can be used just fine.

It's best to play with an XBOX controller. All controls can be mapped to it, and I find my Logitech F710 just as precise as my Logitech Extreme 3D after adjusting the linearity and smoothness of the axes (this can't be done in the game yet AFAIK, I implemented them in my profiler based on ideas found here).

I tried playing with keyboard and mouse, but it was too difficult and no fun at all. I now use a Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas. I'm really happy with it.

I don't use headtracking. It's good if you got it i guess, but I don't find it necessary.

Keyboard and mouse here..and that's despite the fact that i actually have a flightstick, hotas and pedals.

Extra peripherals are not a requirement to properly play the game.

I just use mouse and keyboard, and it's fine ... in fact if you just want to explore and trade its perfect. Yes the "immersion" is less ... but depends on how much you want to spend for that immersion.

I played with a mouse+keyboard until recently, which was completely playable.

You have a lot more accuracy with a mouse too :D

196 hours of fun! While I do have a joystick and TrackIR, I played the vast majory of it with mouse and keyboard alone (like 98% of it). Works perfectly fine and is a lot of fun. Flying with Flight Assist Off is easier with a joystick, though.

Mouse and Keyboard here. Found it sufficiently okay I have put off buying a HOTAS. Bear in mind I am not aiming to be a combat specialist and I dont have a rift either.

playing with mouse and keyboard + voice attack and having a blast. might not be the best combat pilot in the game but i do ok.

Hello everyone,

Almost everyone on twitch etc plays the game with a joystick/flight control or a track IR set etc. However this is really withholding me from buying the game, as I don't want to be outnumbered or anything simply because I'm using the good old mouse & keyboard.

How do you guys experience this?

In fact - it's just a matter of what you are familiar with. I play every game with mouse and keyboard, so ED too. Changing would mean I erase all my control skills as I have to learn a complete new method.
Also every setup has it advatages and disadvantages. In my opinion, if you are not playing daily with joystick and haven't touched one for years, you will be more precise with the mouse. What I observed from youtube: the joystick guys aim worse than the mouse guys. It's not representive but for me it's a bit of the issue controllers also suffer from: why do pro gamers on PC-Shooters NEVER EVER use anything than a mouse? Because it is superior in aiming. (Yes, it's not 100% compareable)
In the end don't worry not to be competitive, in fact you destroy most of the joystick guys who are not used to them completely.

ahhh, this little gem. HeHe... The age old debate over keyboard or joystick, I'm all for keyboard and mouse myself :) last time I used a joystick was on my spectrum 128k +2

Oh geez, how? Switch the relative mouse mode for both axes to Off and it will be fine. Keyboard only must be a nightmare to play.

Yep I've played around but it doesn't work for me

Anyway I've been focused on hauling so getting from a to b ASAP is more important than combat. Using a mouse or joystick in a hauler to fight ain't going to help much :)
