Hardware & Technical How much is a PC that will play this?

Related to a couple other of my threads but also the OP - any suggestions for a cheaper gaming laptop that would be equivalent to a PS4 Pro? For example, what about this Dell laptop?

I don't know enough about laptops to make a better recommendation but that would play ED. The onboard nvidia GTX1050 4Gb would not be as capable as the OP's 1060 3Gb, but a laptop with more graphics power might be a lot more expensive, I don't know.

With a laptop you would be pretty well stuck with the graphics and processor it comes with, I'd get the best I could afford (ram could be upgraded later). With a desktop you could get something more affordable now & have the option to upgrade bit by bit as funds allow.

IMO the biggest limiting factor would be the desired graphics quality.

I built my PC on EBay about 3 years ago for about $600. It is a quad-core I-5 with 16 GB RAM. The cost is somewhat lower than it could have been because I already had a monitor, keyboard, mouse and Windows license. A year later however, I purchased a GTX-1080 GPU for another $600. The on-board GPU ran the game just fine on medium settings, all that was missing were some of the atmospheric effects but I wanted the best graphics I could get.

I would not suggest playing video games on a laptop because no matter how big the laptop, the monitor is always going to be relatively small plus, upgrades for a laptop are limited and expensive.

Seems like you would be paying for the small size rather than the spec with that one. If you're looking for something small that blends in with your living room a console will be hard to beat. If you just want better performance & are prepared to put a big black box near your telly the building one would be better value & offers a better future upgrade path. Even better value would be something secondhand, my 'multimedia PC' (the one attached to my telly) is an i7 from 2009 (870) with 8Gb RAM & a 750ti graphics card, it re-purposes old hardware I already had in the house.

And now Im looking to upgrade parts LOL!
I knew I would. Its why I wanted to go cheaper on my first one.
I am wondering if anyone has jumped from a 1060 3gb to a 1060 6gb. Noticeable difference on ED?
I know it "should" have a good effect, but Id love to hear from someone that has actually experienced it.

If you are using windows10 open task manager (if not, download GPU-Z) and it will show you how much Dedicated GPU RAM is in use while you are in the game, it may help you to make the decision on whether you need more video ram.

3Gb is enough to run ED, more is better, more than 6Gb is probably overkill but it depends how long you plan to keep the card for.

Personally I'd say the difference wouldn't be enough to justify the expense, although you could claw some back by selling the old card. IMO keep what you have until you can afford to make a bigger jump, a 1070 say. Depends on your budget of course.

ETA A more capable GPU can run the game at a higher framerate, requiring a more powerful CPU to keep it supplied with data to work on, set yourself a performance goal you want to achieve. Upgrading can become addictive ;)

I would say going forward, 3GB is a bit on the low side.
Elite will easily use 6GB of Vram, and quite honestly that's only going to increase going forward.
That said it will play just fine with less but I was starting to struggle while I was on a 2GB 960.

CPU is tied more to framerate than resolution or any effects, especially with Elite.
And if you don't expect to run more than say 60hz, like all tv's still do, this might change in a year or so, but we are still waiting for HDMI 2.1.

3GB would be ok now, and for another year or so I bet, but after that I would really not want have much less than 6GB.
