How much is enough very/rare materials to collect

Morning

Been driving around various planets in this system for a few days, and as far as I have bothered to look the system has all the rare/very rare materials.

But in reality to see myself good to go for the engineers, how much should I collect? What am I light on here (e.g. Polonium I have only x3)?

Next planet has Antimony and the one after that Yiittrium (IIRC).

This is what I have so far....

Cadmium x6
Tungsten x22
Niobium x50
Mercury x50
Molybdenum x17
Tin x36
Polonium x3
Technetum x47
Tellurium x44
Antimony x0
Yittrium x0
Ruthenium x12

It very much depends on what you want to do.
Some of those you might not need at all, depending on the modifications you want.
INARA is the place to go if you want to know what you might need, even though it currently is a bit lagging behind the most recent update changes.

I have quite a bit of Molybdenium for example, but it turns out I never needed it.

I could use a bit of that Tellurium :).

if I could give it, I gladly would.

Will have a look at the website - pretty much thinking of "everything" in the engineers to max out the ship.

Just wondering if I am wasting my time chasing some of these.

Cargo is full to the brim of stuff and am chucking it away to make way for other things I haven't got / perceive I haven't got enough of.

Pity you can't trade it or drop it in space for someone to cargo scoop.

It wil depend on how many ships you want to mod, and what mods do you want for each.

Be selective with your mods, the top grade ones have huge buffs but also huge negative side-effects that people tend to ignore but can cause you some issues, or in the least invalidate buffs from other mods.

Yes, but as there are several different types of upgrades for ech component you will still make choices and then need a lot of one type of material and nothing of the other.
So it would be best to plan ahead. This will give you an indication.

As others have said: having 20 of each is a good starting point.

- I also abstain from gathering more than 20 of each.
- If at all, low value materials might be useful in higher amounts - just to skip through the low-level blueprints and reach tier 4 and 5 faster. They also can be used to refill your ammunition (without major hesitation) if necessary.
- Think of bottle-necks. What use will 47 units of Technetium have, if a rare manufactured material will be needed for a blueprint - and you a) own only 5 of them an b) don't have the space for more, due to your over-boarding stocks of high end elemental materials?
- Take notes (descriptive bookmarks), where you reliably found those high grade elemental mats. Elemental materials are way more persistent than manufactured materials, as those might change with the system state. I have marked a nice planet with 1,3% Technetium. If I ever run low on it, I know I will easily find more there.

If you want to fit your ship with level 5 weapons complete with special effects then the things you will need most of are the grade 3 and 4 components. This is because you will go 'grade 1 -> grade 2 -> grade 3 -> grade 4 -> grade 5 -> run blueprint -> add special -> back to grade 3'. So, for example, a ship with 6 weapons you'll end up crafting 18 grade 3 and 18 grade 4 modules to get enough grade 5s.

As such, your best bet is to pick a favoured grade 3 and grade 4 weapon blueprint (the components for each are all the same, regardless of which weapon) and make sure you have lots of those materials. Lightweight and sturdy are often favourites due to the relative ease of obtaining the components. Make sure you have lots of those.

In general, attempting to obtain all of the components to do everything before doing anything is not the best way to go due to the material limits. Do a tour of engineers and upgrade each of them as far as you can go, and that should then give you a better idea of which components you need for each of them to reach grade 5 and hence the engineering you really want.
