How Much Lore is There?

Yes I've seen the forum category for it and yes I know Galnet News exists, but is that it?

Coming from the Star Citizen (don't lynch me for mentioning it) scene, there seems to be a major lack of background material. Even the crates in Star Citizen have their own little back story but I haven't seen anything of the sort from Elite.

Why is there a Federation and an Empire? Where'd they come from? What's their deal?
The company that makes Sidewinders, how'd they become a huge company?
What about Frameshift Drives? Who invented those? How'd that happen?

Is there something I'm missing? Some section of the website or some Mass Effect-type Codex?

Absolutely agree with you, Geers. I've played ED since start of gamma, and it's nice, but I was very disappointed when they didn't include a manual nor encyclopedia with the final release. Today such things could really be in-game if implemented wisely, and would really add a lot to the atmosphere of the game.

you kind of have a point there but saying that its kind of hard to write a manual for a game until its finished, this one was only judged release ready last week - would you prefer they delayed release until they'd finished the manual as well?

Yes, for any such game with complex systems and lore, I certainly would prefer delay of release in order to have a good manual with it! I can just see a newbie getting into this game now, how confused they must be! The tutorials of course help a little, but still a detailed manual and codex/encyclopedia are essential, imo.

I would really appreciate an in-game encyclopedia. That would bring the immersion to another level.

if they did that they would of had every pre-order backer screaming 'where is the game i was promised? I WANT A REFUND!'

besides, there is a 150 page guide to the game written by one of the players, there is a link in the Guides and Tutorials section of the forums. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34437

Yeah, I also wish there was a lot more in-game (and not hosted on external sites, but specifically accessible within the game) lore. Flavour text for all the weapons and modules, more info about the manufacturers and companies..

It slightly helps that if you go to the right-hand sidescreen and navigate to the faction influence section, you can 'select' each faction and get a short description of their general motivations and ethics - that already helps, and I'd like to see a lot more of that kind of stuff.

First, a pet peeve of mine: Please say "they would HAVE had"!!!! (not OF, which is just wrong)!!

Now, about your refund-type supposition, that's just stupid. And besides there are always some people that make that kind of claims for whatever smallest thing they can cook up. They can just be ignored, or told that since the game is still coming, there is no basis for a refund.

And of course there are bound to be third party manuals and such, but that does not reduce the glaring developer error of not including a manual with the game!!

I must say I agree. Hopefully going forward more of this kind of thing will be added, even better if some of it can be found out as we go maybe uncovering secret things about the darker side of the faction you work for making you question your loyalties.
