Newcomer / Intro How Much To Fit Out A Kraik MkII?

sorry for the typo.

I am heading towards being able to buy a Krait MkII at 45MC.

I was just wondering how much extra I need for insurance and a good set of upgrades include FH and SLF?

Depends on what you want to use it for. GroG79's 200 M aren't too far off the mark. You can get it as low as 100 M for a pure cargo hauler or passenger express, or 300 M for an NPC eater (not really advisable as open PvP combat ship, though).

Here are two further examples:
Long range passenger express: https://s.orbis.zone/gg8g (although, admittedly, the Phantom would be slightly better for this loadout)
Small cargo/general purpose mission runner: https://s.orbis.zone/gg8j

The rule of thumb for buying a new ship used to be to have 3-5 times the purchase price available so you can start fitting it out with decent modules.

While the Krait will cost you more than the largest A rated Fuel Scoop it can carry, which is not the case with some bigger ships, the largest A rated Power Plant will cost more than the ship did and exotic armours are around 3 times the ships price. So the question how much does it cost to fit out a ship is similar to the question how long is a piece of string.

From my experience don’t buy a new ship until you can at least outfit it the way you want and still have 2-3 rebuys left. It’s actually faster that way compared to limping along with an E rated new ship and a single rebuy. Also: never sell your previous ships. Never.

Including "insurance":
If you just fit Reinforced Armour, 175,000-190,000 depending on weapons and internal options.
Military Grade Composite Armour pushes it to a bit over 200,000-215,000 and is a good choice for combat heavy missions.
If you must have Reactive Surface Composite, 290,000-305,000.

No idea why people always say you need huge sums of money.

So 100 million if you want to have a couple of insurances. This is an all-round EDO multirole krait with some toys, and it eats elite conda NPCs no problem.

You don't need expensive armour if you never lose your shields. To build a shield tank, you need the Guardian shield boosters, so get a DBX, fit 2 point defence and go do the Guardian unlocks. You need them for most decent ship builds anyway.

You can make decent money shooting pirates in an unmodified Sidewinder, though upgraded thrusters and shields help a lot. A few evenings shooting pirates in a high RES is a lot of fun and will get you enough credits for a fully outfitted Krait. The pirates don't shoot back if you use the Sidewinder with pulse lasers as long as you don't shoot a ship that carries a fighter - mainly Gunship and Anaconda, and less common Kraits and Challengers.

That's how I see it too, and it is reflected in all of my ships. I only own fast shield tanks, and none have any armor aside from HRPs and HD stock bulkheads. Speed and shields are the key for me. And specifically, good, balanced shield resistances, which make the shields highly 'elastic', able to shrug off damage and never come close to collapsing (in PvE of course).

Any shield can collapse if given enough rough treatment, so how the ship is flown factors in too. But from a doctrinal perspective ti's all about keeping mass low, speed high and shields intact. Properly engineered shields are very difficult to take down in NPC combat. I have not lost shields in three years, outside of collision, in PvE combat. This is not a refection of my ability, but of how effective engineered shields are in Elite.

Are you a member of a Squadron yet? Doing Wing Trade work with Squad-mates can be rewarding financially and socially. I've just finished a two hour session where I shared a modest 250m with Wing-mates. I'm sure other Teams, in other areas could do even better. Then, if money does not become an issue, you can concentrate on Engineering and building the best ship you can for the purpose that you want it. Good Luck!
