How much would a Elite Universe Credit be in GBP or USD?

The ED universe uses a universal version of money the Credit (EDC) and with a few credits you can buy a full tank of fuel and fly a few light 'years' to another system to trade.

For a few hundreds of credits you can buy high power anti-ship weapons and missiles.

And for tens to hundreds of thousands you can buy a new interstellar space craft.

So what do you think the exchange rate between GBP or USD and EDC would be?

And will you be able to spend real money to buy more credits in game?

I don't know if you can buy in-game credits for real world money or not, but to my mind this would be just about the absolute worst thing they could do to this game and i sincerely hope they do not do that.

MT is current discussed topic in DDF. As it is rather controversial, there's no information will be creds sold for money yet, or what kind of MT will be available at all.

What I personally think is that there won't be shop in the game, but out of it, that highly likely cosmetics will be sold (judging from response from DDF). Other than that, it's thorny subject as you see, and still ongoing discussion.

Unless I'm completely misinterpreting the OP, he is not asking how much will/should a ED credit cost to buy at the FD store, but if ED universe actually existed, what would be the equivalent in terms of USD/GBP (the exchange rate).

In other words, how many USD/.. would a space ship/space fuel/ cost in order to define an exchange rate....

Maybe 1 cred = 100 USD current :p

I'll hope that will NEVER make it into the game, even that the chances for that are very small :( We will see if Wallet Warriors will rock. Time will tell. Hopefully soon.

I'd so like to hear about a decision in regards to that from FD.

It's already in the meta game via the kickstarter pledges backers get better ships and more starting cash.

And early beta players will have a leg up on release players in time, kickstarter benefits, skills and knowledge gained.

Also Elite is going to be an ongoing game/universe, but once players pay their £35 is that all the income Frontier will get to support maintain and extend the game, the ED Universe's development would just dry up once funds run out.

1 EDC to 100 USD no way.

Cost of
Space shuttle - $1,700,000,000*
F22 Raptor - $150,000,000*

Now if you factor in the the Earth is a very low tech world, these prices will be higher than purchasing from a high tech world.

I would guess that 1 EDC is worth about 1,000,000 USD as in ED you would only expect to pay about 1,700 cr for a Space shuttle and about 150 cr for an F22 Raptor. Unless they are classed as classic/vintage vehicles.

On a side note would Vintage ships/aircraft be available to fly?

FYI most backers that have paid to gain access with better ships and more starting credits also want to start with the base Sidewinder and 100cr according to another thread (cant remember where it is now).
People even backing to the Founders System just want to take a peek at it and then go back to Sidewinder / 100cr.

Its all part of our appreciation of the original Elite and wanting to reproduce that immersion. :)

The starter ships don't look like that much of a leg up. I think a lot of your performance will come from upgrading your systems rather than trading up your ship.

In Frontier the Cobra mkIII was a good 3 times larger than the Sidewinder, the difference doesn't look all that pronounced in the alpha.

The problem with that exchange rate is that it makes your miniscule starting budget of 100 credits equal to 100 million dollars, and when adding on the value of a basic Sidewinder with no optional extras, you get enough money to make "richest person in the world" levels.

If you go by the commodity prices in FE2, you get a rate somewhere between 10 and 1000 USD per credit, depending on which commodity price you use. At the lower end that makes the starting ship prices somewhat plausible as affordable by someone well-off enough to be rare, but not so well-off that they're already rich and don't need to fly a rickety antique in deadly combat against other pilots to make their fortune.

In practice, the answer has to be: the economy of the ED universe is so different to our own there is no meaningful exchange rate, any more than you can ask "how much is a Roman Denarius in USD?" But that's not an interesting answer.

I'm still thinking that it's a million times our currency, for instance how much does a liter of milk cost on earth, about 1 pound (for example) but take that same (about) 1kg of milk up to the space station and would cost you about £3,000 roughly.

Example Falcon 9 rocket apparently gives you about $5k per Kg or roughly £3k.

It costs extra to get things out of the gravity well of Earth.

Now factor that into the cost of goods on your average space station and I bet your a lot closer to a million times our currency.

Regardless of the era, the value of money is related to the energy used to produce and deliver things.

And think about it in the current era you can live a life that is beyond what a roman emperor or king could have. Meals from all around the world, travel the world in a matter of days, visit space (coming soon), play computer games that are out of this world. And if you live in the US you can own more firepower than any king/roman emperor could dream of.

So what will life be like in the ED universe, travel faster and easier across light years than we can between cities, have more destructive power at your fingertips than a small nation. Gather enough energy from a star to power an entire nation today.

I think a factor of about a million to one sounds about right.

its a fact.....

this has to be the fourth or fifth time i've explained this.

consider this....

the play area for elite: dangerous is the milky way, our home galaxy.

the milky way contains (at least) 100 billion stars. some estimates put that figure as high as 400 billion, but we will go with the lower estimate.

now consider this.....

assume instantaneous travel was possible in game and you visited every star in the galaxy (well, 100 billion of them) and stayed for 1 hour at each star. ok? it would take 11.4 million years..... real time, not game time. no-one alive today will see all of the ed play space. no-one alive today.

in other mmos/online games the 'pay to win' is about the end game. thats the bit that is tagged on to keep people subscribing after they have been everywhere and done everything. i know about that because i've done it in other games. the end game.... castle siege, capture the flag, super hard raid.... whatever, the bit where you have to be pimped up to the eyeballs to stand a chance of surviving never mind winning.

so given that no-one alive today will ever be able to say 'i have been everywhere and done everything there is to do in ed' there can be no end game...... because there is no end to it. so there can be no 'pay to win' because there simply isn't a 'win' to pay for.

It could provide funds for further development of the game.

Otherwise FD will end up going the DLC route where you can pay more for...

Why only look at the end-game? It seems like you're artificially narrowing the scope of the argument to suit yourself.

You can 'win' fights or 'lose' fights...

Someone can buy lots of gear and hire NPC wingmen, and buy a big enough advantage that they easily win fights against players doing it the hard way. It doesn't matter how expensive the 'gold' ammo is, because Mr. Wallet Warrior can always buy more. So the wealthy player has an advantage going into every fight.

That's pay-to-win.

A wealthy player always has advantage:
wealthy in money
wealthy in time
wealthy in reflexes
...

The pay to win is completely overblown so far. Personally all items available on the KS as pledge level rewards could be available in the store.

And yes, I'm against selling top of the line, had to get equipment in the store. Or temporary/permanent artificial boosts. But nothing of the sort has really been proposed. Credits? bah, those only depend on time.

I thought that allowing players to buy credits would work well with the ED community.

As most of us are older and slower. So once the game is released to a new generation of Elite pilot with reflexes honed by hours of FPS combat (including ariel combat) we will probably get our behinds handed to us.

They will also have more time than us old timers to play the game and advance.

The only advantage the original Elite generation have is we probably have more pocket money.

So I'm all for Cash for Credits or Tokens for better kit.

And if there is no in game Cash for Credits we will just end up with people selling accounts and kit on e-bay.

Think of all those <Insert lowest wage people> slaving away at ED to farm more kit for cash for wealthy players who don't have time to play but want Elite status or a Python/Anaconda.

Well one way to screw the gold farmers is to undercut them, certainly works for EvE.

Farmers tend to skew an economy quite badly, and cause a lot of stress on servers to boot. Nipping them in the bud can be beneficial for everyone.
