Hardware & Technical How often do you get a new or update your PC ?

I have an 8 year old Intel Core I7 940 P6T Deluxe setup, 12 Gig, updated it with a 512 Gb SSD and a MSI GTX 770 a while back.
(Had a raptor HD and GTX 285 Gfx card)

How often do you Cmdrs get a new rig or update yours ?
ED runs great on my current setup but one is always keen for new stuff ; )

As needed really, usually governed by when something comes out that I want to play but my current system isn't up to it.

I'm still running an i7 920 from 2010 but in that time i've doubled the RAM to 12GB, added an SSD and upgraded the GPU to a 7970. I reckon can easily squeeze another year out of the old girl yet. I don't really plan a major overhaul/new build until 4k becomes properly viable at a sensible price (which will mean a new monitor too). I'm looking at buying a new place with Mrs B at the moment so a new rig will definitely wait until after that.

My next build is waiting for the Oculus Rift to be released. The longer you wait, the cheaper/better. I keep getting tempted, and have priced up a new build dozens of times over the last 12 months.... But thankfully I've persuaded myself out of buying (my current machine runs E: D flawlessly at 1080p, I have no need to upgrade before getting the Rift!).

Every couple of years, more or less. Just before ED Alpha testing started I built a whole new machine and gave the old computer to my wife (it's still a formidable gaming rig). I'm currently considering upgrading the graphics card and monitor, but seeing how quickly the monitor industry is moving I'll probably wait for a 21:9 format, curved IPS screen with G-sync and 5k equivalent resolution. Should be along any time now :D

Monitor tech is all over the place at the moment, g-sync looks great too. I'd definitely hold off getting a new monitor for now, same for a GPU while we wait for DX12.

My current system runs ED in HD no probs so I'm happy for now.

Between 4-7 years depending on stuff. My latest PC FX8350 with 16gb ram and an R9 270x will hopefully last a good while.

I tend to make the core of the system last a good 5 years, with graphics card upgrades around every 2 (or as needed, but generally managed that). I don't bother on CPU upgrades as the whole CPU/motherboard/memory architecture is so tied together these days it's generally better to just swap out the lot.

I basically buy a new nachine when the old one cant run teh games I want to play at least at a meduium/high setting

I then buy the absolute best I can

My last few were for

Microsoft FSX, CIV 4 and CIV 5. This games still runs well on my newest machine. Spent a bloomin fortune though on new monitors/sound systems joysticks and stuff for this game!

I don't play graphic intensive games, so I can postpone upgrading until somethig breaks.
I'm currently on a 5yo Nvidia 560 Ti which seems to do fine.

I upgrade every 2 to 4 years depending on how well I can run current games always looking for the best performance/price ratio.

My PC is the same one I bought when I started University 13 years ago, though since then it has had everything upgraded more times that I care to count (including the case). I update the CPU probably about every 3-4 years, the GPU every 1-2 years, RAM every 5-6 years and motherboard only gets updated if the CPU needs it.

Only when some game forces me. Gothic, Arma and Total war used to do that in the past; ED to my surprise runs just fine on my old rig so I spent my budget intended for upgrade elsewhere.

depends, the GPU is the one getting updated the most often, especially since i had my i7 2600k which is robust @ 4.2ghz and he 16GB of ram + SSD.

tho i updated a year ago to 2 280x so i don't plan on updating at all for at least a year or two, plenty of power remaining :)

case is the least part i will probably need to upgrade, cosmos rc1000 + full noctua from the day i bought it, i feel that beast might live longer than me really, that thing is robust and can handle anything i might dream to throw at it (currently holds my rig fully watercooled, all is inside)
