Hardware & Technical How often do you get a new or update your PC ?

Mine's about 9 years old now. On my fourth video card and third sound card. Fans replace numerous times. HDs also several times, currently SSD. Third PSU

Really do need to think about updating though. Currently restricted to 4Gb RAM which is a nuisance.

Concerned I will loose XP altogether. The updates will be available for a couple more years for it, so I might give it a try fairly soor. Like others, holding off til I absolutely need to to get the latest gear.

Also, would really like to be able to use a non M$ OS. Steam have one planned later this year, that might be the business. I can use that on one HD. A second using some variant of Linux and the third, XP, hopefully.

My PC buying has changed pretty dramatically over the last few years. It's quite strange actually but since I started building for others I stopped upgrading my own nearly so much.

Right now my main PC has an i5 3570 (used to have an i5 2500K but I swapped that with my girlfriend as her i5 was having a mobo compatibility issue). The graphics card is only a 7850 1GB, which I started using due to a customer return 18 months ago. Before that I had a 6850 which was starting to get a bit long in the tooth at 2.5 years old.

I used to upgrade my graphics card(s) every other year max, and quite often yearly. To think I had crossfire 5850's 4 years ago, which are probably around as powerful as my current single 7850 now.

Still using a PSU I bought 7 years ago. It was a good PSU then and it works fine now so why not. I've had a couple of SSD's, now using an MX100. 8GB of DDR3 is probably the last I'll have of that type of memory.

Still got 3 monitors though my last major purchase was a BenQ LED IPS 1920x1200 to upgrade my main screen. With hindsight, monitors are probably the smart upgrade. You just can't beat a nice monitor.

On the whole high-end hardware is stagnating badly and it's just gonna get worse over the next 5 years.
