How persistent are objects in game?

Recently I came across a crashed data point, and saved and exited when I couldn't work out how to access it.
I then looked around on the forums etc and found the answer I was looking for.
When I re-loaded my game the data point wasn't there anymore.
This got me to thinking, was this just a glitch, or are objects like data points, and more importantly canisters persistent in game?
I say this because I've been storing my found canisters at points around the galaxy (so as not to reduce my jump range) to hopefully pick them up again before I return to the bubble.
Is this madness?

I'm 99% sure they are not persistent at all, and 80% sure they're randomly spawned in a few km radius around your srv while you roam the surface, bit like unidentified signal sources in supercruise.

EDIT: This goes for random stuff found on surface, crashes, canisters, data points, mineral nodes. Bases are quite persistent, I'd think.
