How Pips alter shield effectiveness

There has been various work on understanding how shield effectiveness changes with the number of pips to SYS. Frontier have stated that more pips in SYS increases shield effectiveness but have not provided any data on the specifics. However, a recent patch note provided enough data to work this out so without further ado here is the graph of shield effectiveness Vs. number of pips in SYS for both 2.2 and 2.3:

As can be seen, in 2.3 the effect of lesser numbers of pips in SYS will produce a better return in terms of effectiveness.

And for those of you who prefer to think in terms of resistances:

Great work jgm, nice graphs too :) So did you work out the actual equation which produces this graph?

Excuse my ignorance but how do you have 0.5 of a pip?

When you allocate pips to one capacitor it takes it from the other two capacitors equally, if possible. So if you reset your power distributor settings then add one pip to WEP you'll end up with 1.5 in SYS and 1.5 in ENG. You'll see this graphically if you take a close look at the pip colours.

The increase in Shield Strength from pips in my normal configuration is about 1% more than the loss I was due to "suffer" from Shield Boosters on my Res Build, so MORE shields for me in 2.3 without any changes required. <Smug Bunny>

Good to see it this way, just looking at numbers doesn't tell as much as nice picture. Why frontier doesn't show this as pic? Would help a lot when they are talking about module or in come changes how everything look before and after in side by side comparison.

So I'm kinda upset that I never knew that pips gave your shield more resist until i saw the patch note. Shame so much good info is so hard to find.

I love this kind of work.

Most definitely worthy of rep.

The changes make each SYS pip level viable for something instead of it being all or nothing.

Huh, considering I usually run with 2.5 pips in shields, looks like I'm going to get a rather significant buff to shield resistance.
