How Roadmaps could be...

What a roadmap can look like, over at the (spit) other games website...

What do you folks think, could this sort of thing be good for FD?
Do you think they could ever be capable of communicating effectively at this late stage?

Here is also the years progress tracker, based on a team by team look at what is about to be delivered,

The roadmap from RSI is a silly example as it's more of a guide than actual predictions.

If you want a roadmap example, the most oft cited one from Asobo games.

You'll notice a key difference between this roadmap is Frontier's is that they had 4 months planned out. Frontier has 3 weeks, with nothing until Console release, and the one from Frontier is devoid of any future CONTENT on the road map.

This wouldn't be so bad if updates were regular (eg, No Mans Sky), but at this point, everyone is going, "OK, you gave us Odyssey.. we had a go, it's a work in progress, but whats next? After we tire of FPS, and scanning the 100th plant that was the same as the old plant, whats next? Base Building? Thargoid FPS?

This entire process smacks of "This is an Alpha for PC, you play it, and the 'real' content will be here with the consoles".

anything is better than a bullet point list :)

but I like the RSI one for sure. It clearly communicates what each team works on (regardless of whether they will finish on time or not, because they never do at CIG)

I will probably check that game out when it comes out.

A roadmap that was years in the making, that is never on time and constantly being changed.

No, that's not a good road map example.

It looks nice, but completely useless.

What we got is exactly what they said they would give us.

If you were expecting a road map of the next year or two, then you should re-read what was written.

Yeah, all that road map needs is a final destination.

Elite Dangerous goals right now are to fix the game, get it into a stable place, make changes to the UI and menus. They clearly stated this, they even asked what everyone thought of the UI. It's not FDevs problem that YOU and others got your hopes and got ideas into your head about what it should be.

So, to review:

-The bugfix roadmap that was announced beforehand as a bugfix roadmap turned out to be (gasp!) a bugfix roadmap.

-Various forum users who didn't properly read the announcement became angry when said bugfix roadmap turned out to be a bugfix roadmap.

-I consumed copious amounts of popcorn throughout the day.

Well, it could be a wee bit more detailed, not just fixes and adjustment proclamations.

Something else that just occurred to me:

Everyone is angry that Odyssey’s release was rushed, and then they turn around and demand that Frontier rush through all the important fixes so they can deliver more content.

You know, because rushing through things like optimization and bugfixing clearly worked out well for everyone a couple weeks ago...

We’ve seen what happens when Frontier rushes things. How about we not encourage them to do that again? I’m glad they’re taking time to properly address things.

The worst thing SC could do would be actually release a game, which is why they aren't. The roadmaps weekly videos and new ships ARE the game.

They did specifically mention some stuff, such as the UI and team missions. But I doubt they can go into toi much detail as I doubt they have all the details at the moment either. A lot I would think would still be in investigation and planning stages.
