Astronomy / Space How Steven Hawking’s Legacy Points to a Previous Universe

ALL the evidence shows our universe emerged from a single event: an eruption commonly known as the Big Bang.

What preceded that point is a mystery.

But it has significant implications.

It’s about the fate of our universe.

We know space is expanding. We can see that in the way all the galaxies around us are moving outward. But how far can it extend?

What happens next?

Will the universe merely boil away into the void as its component parts get further and further apart?

Or will it reach some kind of tipping point, where space turns around and begins to contract on itself?

The late Stephen Hawking had his own ideas. Now astronomers may have discovered one of the critical telltales that could prove his notions to be true.

Steven Hawking???

First, it's Stephen Hawking and second, Frederick Pohl described this exact concept in his 1977 sci-fi novel Gateway. Look it up, it's a decent read, a whole series of novels. o7

People tend to forget that science fiction writers actually invent much of the technology we take for granted. Isaac Asimov described synchronous communication satellites 1964. Arthur C. Clarke described a Sky-hook in 1979 in his novel The Fountains Of Paradise and we will probably have them within another 50 years or so. Pick up any old Tracy comic book from the 1930s to see a smart watch . . .

True.

But we're veering into the "Stephen, with a ph" direction here... :p

It can be fun to think about what happened billions of years ago, or what will happen billions of years from now.

But I can think of more pressing maters I'd like scientist to work on, like clean free energy and anti-gravity :-D

I didn't even notice that spelling error in Hawking's naming in the article and by-line. It just proves that mainstream journalists are illiterate idiots.

You'd better talk to the scientific community about that. I can't help you.
