How to achieve Baron Ranking

Hi all,

Am after a little advice.....

I am currently grinding away in my type 7 earning around 500k per round trip (6 jumps) and am beginning to contemplate my future.

The way I see it I have 2 options

Option 1

I keep going as I am for about another 10m credits until I can afford a clipper and moderately kit it out.

Option 2

I keep going as I am for about another 50m credits until I can afford a python and moderately kit it out.

My problem with option 1 is I am in a type 7 and no way (as far as I know) to earn my Baron ranking within the empire unless this can be done other than BB missions
My problem with option 2 is that I am beginning to get bored with trading and am in need of lasers again.

Assuming its not practical to go charging into battle with my type 7 does anyone have any ideas if it is possible to gain baron rank in an artic lorry?

Are clippers really worth it?

Lots of questions I know but im so confused.......:S

Perfect "starting" trader Clipper loadout (240 ton with bare minimum shields, 14+ Ly range): http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=303,,2-A0A0888SA08S6k,0Bk0AA0720727Q405U03w03w

BTW you won't actually need Baron rank if you pick an Empire station that also sells Clippers as your "home base". As you rank up with the local station faction, that Baron requirement drops. Some people report being able to buy a Clipper as early as Master or Squire rank.

Clippers are great but imo not worth the trouble of the hull mass bug right now. Stick with the Type 7 until Python. As far as getting baron, you will be required to do at least one assassinate mission to progress, but it's an elite clipper, not an anaconda, and the AI doesn't know how to properly fly a clipper so it's not too bad. But I still wouldn't try it in a Type 7. I bought a kitted Cobra and did all my rank progressions in that. More than enough.

Some of the progression missions require couriers to small outposts, some go kill pirates or bounty hunters, some require goods. I parked my trading vessel where I am running trades, bought and kitted a cobra. Now all my bases are covered.

Keep grinding, just dont stop, watch netflix, tv, anything while you do it, take the cargo size loss and get a docking computer so it becomes even more robotic and you pay less attention.

Personally my biggest fault was id aim for a ship, id get it and half the mods and then after a little pew pew, spend ages grinding less efficient than if id just stuck with it originally.

Your at a good point, ignore the Baron rank, aim for getting allied with a particular Empire station that sells the clipper (i'll PM you more info on this :))

The clipper is a fantastic upgrade. Its personally the best middle ship in the game. It had great firepower, its got good jump distances and can carry cargo pretty well. Exploration is a little weak but the feel of the ship is a world of its own.

Not all progression ranks are specifically combat related. Some are hunt a certain guy then followed by deliver 2 of an item to a station (and even funnier the station you deliver to is the one your in AND they sell the required item :p). You can get to baron quite easily purely trading and just being patient waiting for the right mission to pop up.
