How to auto dock?

So the flying controls in the game apparently SUCK and refuse to accept that I am trying to dock at a station - I've tried flying into the gate, I've tried landing on it, I've flown through the yellow "Field" leading to it - both with and without "landing gear" deployed to no avail.

Where is the command for the auto-dock. I usually prefer to manually dock, but this is obscene - it shouldn't take 20 minutes to dock a ship manually - especially when you fail in the end!

Have you done the docking tutorial and watched the video?

Sounds as if something is wrong in there - you're going for the wrong pad, or you're facing the wrong way or something.

Wrong pad...?

The controls refuse to accept, or the station?

Sounds like you're doing it wrong.

I send a request for permission - it says "land at platform 1" - I find the big platform with a 1, fly through the yellow thing and WHAM right into a wall.... so I figure, maybe I need to land on it (which would be kinda dumb, but what the heck) so I try that.... nothing - so I try it again upside down..... nope..... I tried coming in from the sides, coming in backwards - I always either just hit the wall or just sit there.......

I'd highly recommend just to watch a few Videos of people docking at Stations.
Also : make absolutely sure you have both Flight Assist ON and Rotational Correction ON. First landings in Stations would get extremely difficult otherwise.

In short :
- request Docking
- fly into the Station
- use compass ball to locate your pad (upon crossing the entrance it will jump to your Pad location)
- setup with landing gear deployed, so that you face the Numbers just disappearing when you move a tad forward
- use Thrusters to vertically settle down (observe Landing HUD Animation setting in some ~20m above the Pad on small ships and use it to pinpoint touchdown)

It's really not that hard to do. But it does require the Control Setup to be completed to inlucde full flight controls, incl. Thrusters and backwards Thrust.
If your Throttle is i.e. Forward Only, bind a Key or Joystick botton to digital Backward Thrust.

I'm using a 360 controller with the default control pad scheme - I'm assuming that's been tested since that's the #1 PC controller in the world?

You fiy through the yellow landing lights?

Yeah, you're supposed to stop and land in the box.

Flying backwards won't work as you can only land on the pad in one direction, namely facing the aircraft tower.

The 360 controller is used by a fair few here, including the devs if you watch some of the videos.

Somewhere this is going wrong for you. When you request docking you'll be given a pad number, say 01.

You need to fly into the station and find pad 1, so far this seems fine. The 01 you see in yellow has a yellow four-sided holographic box below it. Fly ABOVE that so you can see the 01 right in front of you (and usually some form of control tower). Stop. Lower landing gear (check on the right it's shown as down) and thrust slowly down. You are trying to land like a helicopter with the four sides of the holographic display around you.

When you get close to your pad the radar will change to a target and graphical representation of your ship. Align the ship with the target and lower yourself. NOTE orientation is important. You must be facing away from the entrance.

You say "nothing happens" well, over the right pad the display will change, the wrong pad you get a pad loitering warning and death will happen.

Maybe some video could help us?

Have you watched the training videos for docking? Anyway, in your post you did not mention deploying the landing gears. While you approach you landing pad you should deploy your landing gears. When you are on top of the landing pad with your landing gears out, there will be landing assist in the radar showing whether your ship is aligned right.

While you approach the landing pad with your landing gears out, you want to use thrusters. First set your speed to zero by pressing X. Then use your thrusters to align your ship to the center of the landing assist. Then press down slowly.

I've been landing since beta 2 and yesterday I decided to buy a Cobra, for old times sake and just to have a change of pace from my larger rides. I was crushing around the Lave, Leesti, Diso group looking for some fun when I was surprised when docking a few times and the pad lights would go on and off and the bullseye would never show even though I was scraping on the right pad. Strangely, after rubbing around the center of the pad it just landed! hasn't happened since, but that landing was definitely bonkers. Yes, I was aligned properly on the right pad and all the usual stuff. it was definitely bugged - it wasn't me doing something wrong ... this time.
And then there's tonight when stored ships show as being at the wrong stations... but that's for another thread.

Happens from time to time since beta. I usually just leave, cancel docking request, and request again when the pad doesn't even show the indicator.

Nothing I can make a video with - but I should just be able to select the station and select "Dock" for automatic docking, and for manual docking all I should have to do it touch that yellow anywhere anywhere and it should take over the rest.... I've played a LOT of space simulators in my day (from the old elite back in the day to the X's (which were good till R), and I haven't seen a game with docking that was this bad in quite some time - even X Rebirth got that bit right mostly..... This needs to be a near instant process - anything more than 1 minute from the time I see the station to the time I'm docked inside (barring being in a firefight of course) is too much.

Just tried again and nada - it does beep at you when you stop on it, but thats the only indication anything is different......

And of course the 360 controller is the top controller in the world - that's not even a debatable subject - more of them are in peoples homes by a large margin than any other PC controller - as for performance it's irrelevant- such a major peripheral almost must be supported, and if it's not it needs to clearly state as much..... as the game recognizes it I am assuming it is supported so the controls should work with it.
