Newcomer / Intro How to buy insurance?

So much advice in the forums about never flying uninsured. I'd like to buy insurance, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how or where.

I'm in a Sidewinder, so maybe that's the issue, but I just purchased a commodity to sell for profit using two-thirds of my cash on hand, so I thought it might be a good idea to insure it (especially since my last mission ended when I crashed into a star). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

In the right hand window (the one opened up with the 4 key by default): It will say "rebuy" this is what you need to pay to get the ship you are flying back if you die.

you already have it, when you die you have to pay an excess (deductible) the amount you will need is shown on the right side status tab, just make sure you always have the credits to cover it (plus a little more for cargo) and you'll do fine.

PS: you cannot insure cargo at this time, only your ship.

There's no need to buy it, you already have it.

It's the deductible (excess) that you need to pay, which is a proportion of your ship's cost. Check on the right screen for the 'rebuy' cost, that's the cost of the insurance.

So if the panel says Rebuy Cost 34,000 Cr make sure you NEVER leave port with less than 34,000 Cr and you will be able to get your current ship back with all your weapons and modules if the worst happens.

Your Cargo is not currently covered so if hauling, keep some cargo seed money back too.

OK, thanks!
Now it makes sense. It's a little confusing when people say to make sure you have insurance, but I suppose that's easier than saying "make sure you have the credits for the rebuy cost."

I did end up rebuying my previous loadout after crashing (actually just got fried by the star from heat damage), and that load of cargo was not a big deal, so I ended up using the system as desired without even knowing it, heh.

I have read that cargo insurance has been discussed and think that might be a nice addition. I assume that insurance adjusters would make sure you hadn't jettisoned the cargo before filing your claim ;)
