How to calculate CGs?

AFAIK, to be in the top 75%, you merely have to contribute more than 25% of those who contributed to the CG. Given that a rather sizable group will contribute only once, simply so they can get a reward for little effort, if you contribute more than that, you're usually guaranteed to get into the top 75%.
Check out the CG thread in the Community Goals section. Someone will have already done that for you.
In general you need more information.
Even if there is a normal distribution for contributions, you still need to know the standard deviation for the sample.
It could be a few CMDRs contributing a lot, or many contributing a little, or a mixture.
The CG thread linked is good, because some players inform about their own data, thus reducing the guesswork.
It's not possible to calculate since there's no way of knowing how many commanders contributed what to the CG. As mentioned the CG threads will usually have people posting what it took them to pass a threshold at a given moment in the CG. That's about as good as it gets.
There's a calculator linked for every CG in the thread for that CG. The more people input their own details after a run, the more accurate it is - it only takes 30 seconds to complete.
