I am wondering how I can chat with friends? when I go to the menu, pick a friend and select the options, i can only block or unfriend him, not chat with him. so then what am I supposed to do with a friend? just keep on searching through the galaxy until I find him and I can chat with him via the comms tab?

Newcomer / Intro how to chat with friends

If they are online you should see their name on the first menu - should be to the right - a list of friends who are currently online. If you click on their name I believe there should be an option to chat with them.
When you are in game you can press 2 to highlight the comms panel. Press esc to remove the focus from the chat text, and then use the Q and E keys to move to the friends tab. Then W and S to move through your friends and space on the friend to display the menu where you can select to text them.
The above really all depends on what keys you have set up for normal for moving through the usual left and right UI panels etc...
