How to check FPS

I suggest installing http://www.fraps.com/ .
It shows FPS, takes screenshots (directly saving them to a file), and records videos.

Already have that, but it eats about 10 FPS to run it with the game. Is there possibly a key or key combination that could be used to display the FPS?
Not built into the game, no. I've seen one of the QAs somewhere also suggest Fraps.
Another option would be https://gaming.msi.com/de/features/afterburner, which might even perform better than Fraps, but I can't really tell.
If you happen to own a recent Nvidia graphics card, you should use ShadowPlay.
